Another sata or M.2 SSD for my X58 system?

I need more SSD storage space as games just consumes more and more space. So one more SSD is needed. The problem is just that i have no more sata port free. 3 sata SSD, 4 sata HDD and one sata DVD-drives takes them all.

Right now i have these SSD in my X58 system.

Samsung 950 PRO M.2 NVMe 256 GB

Samsung EVO 250 GB

CRUCIAL MX300 275 GB

CRUCIAL M4 64 GB yes and old one but works perfect.

Since i dont have more free sata ports i am thinking about getting another M.2 SSD or shut i bite the dust and take my old CRUCIAL M4 64 GB SSD out of use (its just if i take it out its to small for use other places and if i sell it i dont get much for it any way) and get another sata SSD. Use is most for games. What will you guys recommend?

For SSD i thinking samsung 960 EVO 500 GB if M.2 (M.2 is a bit more costly than sat yes, but faster and i can take it with me to the next pc aswell) or if sata Crucial MX300 525GB or Samsung 850 EVO 500GB. But i am open for other sujestions.

id make the most of the sata ports i had if i were You. No SSD's under 250-256Gb's. & your right, you wont get any real Dollars forthat 60Gb drive, so either store it for a Rainy day, use an external adapter to install a Backup of your OS on it, or give it away..... my 2 cents

iirc, you need to chose wisely when buying a NVMe drive for x58. unless that incompatibility been resolved,

Make that 64 GB SSD to an external drive for backup of OS is not a half bad idea or just for an external storage i can use for musik in my car for a sample and by that re use it to a good perpose in sted of just letting it rot away in a closet. That might be the bedst solution cause its hardly worth the trouble of try selling it for just a few cents.

M.2 SSD is not a problem on X58. I al ready have an Samsung 950 PRO fully working as a OS/boot drive but this SSD has a legacy mode that does old lagacy bios can recognize the ssd as an IDE drive. But other M.2 SSD can only work as a storage drive and not as a boot drive if i have understand it clear. So in the worst case i just have to find a Samsung 950 PRO 512 GB M.2 if any other M.2 completly fails. Been running with the Samsung 950 PRO 256 GB now for 3 months with out failure of any sort. I am also considering M.2 SSD because even though my mother board has sata 3 it has a crappy marvel controller that is not giving full true sata 3 speed and i only got two anf those are al ready in use by my crucial and samsung EVO SSD and after have trying one m.2 SSD i just see this as the solution i will be most satisfied with even though it is a bit more exspensive and i can take it with me over to the next system as well. Another sata ssd would be forced to work on sata 2

After all this what you other guys think. Is M.2 SSD what i would be most satisfied with or shut still go sata SSD?

as you can see down here Samsung 950 PRO M.2 SSD is fully working on my system. 960 EVO shut work as long its just for storage like games.

M.2 are ok for Boot Drives, but as @jboydgolfer said use the SATA ports for storage, they aren't that terribly slow.

For storage yes its plenty fine, but this SSD is for storage games and i want load time in games as low as possible. but i just cant deside if sata is still the way to go or M.2 will help load games faster.

Load times for SATA SSDs especially Crucial MX300 or Samsungs are pretty darned quick

Agreed its not like sata SSD load slow in games, its more can M.2 boost it even more.

Game load times depend on the games themselves, not only the medium they're installed on. GTA 5, for example, doesn't give a rats ass what it is installed on.

Well then it looks like i know what to do so then.

Make old 64 GB SSD to an external storage and getting another sata SSD. It looks like your all agreed to that M.2 dosent benefits game load time.

be sure to check the power delivery of the cables/dock You order/use with that SSD, i have had a few that didnt deliver enough power to drive even SSD's via USB. if You dont have external mounting hardware, & you live in the US i might have some that You can have if you'd like.

I will take that in for a counter then order a case for the SSD.

I dont live in the US but over at europe in a country called Denmark.

Instead of a lot of small drives, buy a couple of large drives, say 1 TB.
That way you will have free Sata ports to use later if needed.
You can also use a PCI-e adapter with M2 drives to increase capacity.

Just pitching in with an idea for that 64GB - get a USB 3.0 enclosure for it and use it as a windows installer, with copies of all your drivers, installers, and whatever else you'd need for a clean install.
