Since my X800XT PE is half dead (can't play games without artifacts but ok for 2d) I will soon change card

but I don't have a lot of money right now and it will be hard to find a better card than my previous for less than 300$.. my board is agp so I'm limited in choices

the candidates are:

BFG 6800gs 256mb (239$)

BFG 7800gs 256mb (339$) (a little too much expensive but still in the race)

ATI AIW X800XL 256mb (179$) (liquidation sale)

ASUS 6800 512 mb (215$)

I think the best choice with the best performance/price ratio is the X800XL, but it doesen't have the newest technologies and gets very hot

what do you think?

Yup, you don't really have a choice I reckon. The only card among the 4 you mentioned that would provide a significant boost over your X800XT PE is the 7800 GS, and that's at stock speed (7800 GS is one of the most massively overclockable cards around). There are cheaper 7800 GS's than the BFG but I'd still recommend the latter. I have one and never experienced any problems with it whatsoever. I run it at 490/1400 with stock cooler.

This is kind of easy to me. The X850 is a VERY good card.

If you are going to spend $339 for a card than get a NEW mobo and PCIX16 and 7900GT($279).

Why would you spend more to get a 7800? The 6800 cards are several levels below the current cards so unless ur getting them for very low price forget them.

I saw on this forum a post on how to unlock to 16 pipes and over clock. That would be awsome for the price as I have one stock that I play BF2 all the time turned up with all the candy and love it.

I just bought my new X850XT from Newegg for $135. I honestly believe that is the best deal in the world for a video card. (except for free).

I wanted the X1800GTO but weather it could be unlocked was yes sometimes and no sometimes. But its a power hog and makes LOTS of extra heat.

How do you beat a under $140 for a Video card that plays 99.9% of the games well?

He he he I almost did that myself but seeing how buggy the 7900GT turned out to be I'm glad I didn't. I would have preferred a 7800GT but the few I found were way too expensive so I settled for keeping my AGP board for another year and bought the BFG 7800 GS OC. It's very expensive but turned out to be also very reliable and quite faster than I had expected, much faster than my 6800 GT in any case. I can't unlock any pipelines but both core and GDDR3 are massively overclockable, and the stock cooler is of a surprisingly good quality, unlike the flimsy one that comes with the 7900 GT.
