Hi everyone.

I have a question.

A friend of mine told me that he has been using Antifreezer + Destilliert Water for almost 10 years on his Watercooled Machine and that he has never had a problem, Now my question is is it a good idea?

Thanks in advance.

Thats what I used years ago when I had a custom loop.

I'm sure there are better fluids to use these days.

Antifreeze isn't necessary. I've used distilled water and PT Nuke for the last decade.

i just pour in distilled H2O.....i see no reason to use anything else. water difuses heat VERY effectively, and its Cheap AF......no reason to play Mr Wizzard (Bill Nye for you younger guys) ;)

I was reading a little bit more about it and i found a few things:

1 - I believe car coolant is denser and would make the pump work harder

2 - car coolant is thicker, made for a different temp range, and can be more corrosive/damaging(at least compared to water)

3 - If you're talking about pure antifreeze then don't do it.

4 - Antifreeze doesn't transfer heat as well as water, isn't a great thermal conductor

5 - it is too thick and would make problems with the pump.

6 - using automotive coolants can be used, but only with rated parts.

7 - the tubing we use is not rated for automotive coolant, the acrylics are not, PETG is not rated for this type of glycol and some rubber items used are not specific for automotive coolant use.

Any suggestions?

Call me Noob but i am freaking out adding just Destilliert Water, Algae it's the main reason.

Algae it's the main reason.
A 10-30% mix of ethylene glycol with distilled water will help the algae issue. Car coolant/antifreeze contains silicates which can clog the smaller channels in your water blocks.

What about Destilliert Water and maybe just a little bit of Antifreeze because at least you can run the same Water for over 2 years.

Ive been using car coolant for the good part of 13 years no probs.

I get the 50/50 mix water/coolant. Its flows just like water.

Great performance and my blocks keep shiny clean!

I had too many issues with distilled water with my parts going corrosive.

In my main system I use just some bottled water and a bit of ethylene glycol additive and I've never had a problem. That said I don't usually check it often... :p

For my water chiller I like to use a 50/50 or greater mix of Antifreeze & tap water due to the evaporator getting down to about -25C and also because the evaporator is copper tube with aluminum fins. Been running it for over a year now and looks just like it did when I first put it together.

I really miss those days when i didn't know anything about Watercooling, everything was so simple just a Heatsink with a Fan and done, today just headaches, Algae, coolants, Antifreeze, corrosion, additives, this that etc etc etc :shadedshu:

Conventionally water cooled PC's (pump, tubing, rad, block) don't need any kind of antifreeze/coolant as they aren't anywhere near any kind of condition to need it. Straight distilled is fine in a closed loop. I've gone as long as 3 years with the same distilled water in my loop. No issues. Also, running alcohol based liquids through plastic is great for ruining the plastic.

Straight water with no form of biocide?, for 3 years?
You are an anomaly.

There is alcohol resistant tubing readily available almost everywhere, and most decent pumps don't seem to mind.

Complex topic, but the simple answer is that given low deltas in temperature (relatively speaking) and low energy transfer the inclusion of things besides water is tolerable. It's a good idea from a maintenance perspective, and generally has negligible detectable impact on performance.

On the math side:
https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/thermal-conductivity-d_429.html
Conductivity for water: 0.58 (Watts/(meter*Degree Kelvin))
Conductivity for ethylene glycol: 0.25

Heat transfer is primarily conduction, so: Q/t = k*A*(T1-T2)/d

Q/t = energy generated by CPU in watts, that is transferred out of the system
k = conductivity of medium
A = area of contact
(T1-T2) = difference in temperature between materials
d = thickness of material medium being conducted through

This is a poor equation to include losses as the fluid circulates in the loop, but most calculations assume no loss given the poor conductivity of plastics and low delta T.

You are right that ethylene glycol is more viscous (the term for how much energy is required to force a material to flow), but the pump is not likely to burn out faster. If you crack open a modern pump, you'll find that the blades are generally mounted onto a ceramic bearing with magnets embedded into them. The part that varies the magnetic fields, thereby generating motion, is entirely outside the fluid.
You'd need a substantial amount of viscosity to burn such a pump out, or perhaps a much less newtonian fluid (think silly putty, the more force that is applied the more viscous a material is). I'd suggest reading up here for a basic understanding: https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/dynamic-absolute-kinematic-viscosity-d_412.html

On the theory side, water is one of the best conductors there are. Antifreeze and biocidal compounds generally are poorer solutions, but are added because metals and water generally lead to oxidation. People add ethylene glycol because it is biocidal, and generally the plastic hosing has negligible solubility to ethylene glycol. Alcohol (isopropyl or ethly alcohol) is highly soluble to most plastics, and therefore a bad idea. It also is especially a bad idea if using the newer aluminum parts. Aluminum "doesn't oxidize" because rather than a flaky layer (like iron) it forms a barrier oxide layer that prevents further damage. Ethyl and Isopropyl alcohol tend to dissolve this layer, and allow corrosion to continue unimpeded.

Yeah, more than once too. I use solid color tubing and my reservoir isn't in any kind of sunlight. There's not a lot of reason for any kind of organic life to spring up in it.

There is alcohol resistant tubing readily available almost everywhere, and most decent pumps don't seem to mind.
Yeah, it's more clear acrylics in reservoirs and things like pump tops that can be ruined by alcohol.

When i installed a smaller rad on my H100 pump i reused the coolant. It looked, smelled and tasted just like car antifreeze.

I guess i will continue using what i have been using for more than five years ( Innovatek Protect IP ) it's expensive 12€ per 1 litter and i need 6 litters but at least i don't need to be thinking if Antifreezer is good for the Loop or not or if the pump will work harder due to it etc etc.

The Antifreezer idea was because using it as i said in one of my posts you can run the same Water for over 2 years even 3.

For many people just Destilliert Water works fine for other it doesn't or for some just Antifreezer works too, that said, too many contradictions and i can't still decide if use it or not.

I have been using destillert water and car coolant (blue/red) (80/20) for the last 20 years and have had no big issues, tubes is getting harder over the years and i have seen some plexi cracking on a cpu block but it was 10ish years old, so if it was because of that only, i don’t know.
