Thanks.
Been on both sites and read about those. Just wanted to have a first hand info from users who are using any of these.
This Bitdefender seems OK for what I need.

Windows Defender (or Security Essentials if you're still on Win 7) is free, built-in, and works better than any of the bloatware that anti-virus vendors will try to sell you.

Sophos, Eset at a push but Sophos is my go to AV. One of the best on the market, their free version is more than enough for home machines

The built in Defender (plus good practices) is enough.
If you want go one notch above a good free solution like Kaspersky (plus good practices) should serve you well.

I've been recommending Comodo for years. They have been a consistently high quality antivirus/antimalware provider. They have a free version which gets the job done well.
They also have a package that includes an excellent firewall which makes Microsoft's security look like amateur-hour.

I recommend Bitdefender Internet Security. It’s excellent, but expensive. However, it is a good price for 3 PC’s if you have them. I run this on secondary and wife’s PC’s.

My other recommendation is to run built in Defender, which is perfectly adequate, with the paid version of Malwarebytes. I run this combo on my HTPC.

The two of them recognize each other and CAN run resident without stepping on each other’s toes. The main reason I recommend it is because one of the paid malwarebytes modules is the Anti-Exploit protection. I used the standalone for years before it formally went away and got incorporated in the Malwarebytes 3.0, and it is effective.

If you don’t want to spend anything, get Defender and the free version of Malwarebytes 3.0 and run regular secondary scans with it because Defender’s resident protection is on the lower end of the scale.

According to AV Comparatives and VirusBulletin there are three AVs which consistently show near perfect or perfect results: BitDefender, Kaspersky and F-Secure.

Personally I prefer the first two because F-Secure has too many false positives and generally makes life harder ;-) The free versions of BitDefender and Kaspersky are more than enough: their full versions/Internet suites are gimmicks for mentally challenged. In terms of performance my favourite AV is Panda but it misses viruses. F-Secure is quite heavy on your PC.

To be honest I don't run any AV at all on my Windows 10 (Windows Defender is disabled via GPO) because ... they are all pretty much redundant and slow down your PC. In my 30 years of using the PC I've never been infected.

I've tried most of them, currently on Sophos Home which is really good but I get a lot of false positives. I'm actually getting a bit fed up with the false positives and considering a change. To be fair my son installs a lot of games, many indie ones and they cause the bulk of the false positives. I like that it covers 10 machines on one account.

Bitdefender is pretty much the same as Sophos home. It works really well, I would say it is even more paranoid, even more pushy and over protective, crap load of false positives and they really want you to use all of their features. The whole wallet and safe shopping browser deal.

Commodo does the same thing they want you to use all their software and features. Works pretty well but I had a lot of updates that failed and had to be re-installed. This was several years ago but it pretty much forced me to go find something that ran more smoothly that I could recommend to the less technically savvy.

Kasperky worked well but can you trust them? They have already been caught with their hand in the cookie jar.

I only tried NOD32 for a short time, if I remember correctly they didn't offer a multi-machine deal for home users. It seemed okay.

Symantec is GARBAGE, bloatware, runs slow as dirt and takes forever to update. I have spent countless hours cleaning it off machines for people with problems. That goes for PC and Mac users alike.

I haven't used McAfee in years but my past dealings with it alone are enough for me to NEVER try it again. GARBAGE

Panda seemed okay but it lacked some of the features I wanted in the basic package and the full package was expense if I remember correctly.

Before I decided to find a new AV several years ago I used the free Avast. In addition to getting bloated, they became pushy, constantly trying to get you to buy their products. I had dealt with their professional product and the licensing was awful.

AVG used to make a halfway decent product but they have become bloated and unusable too.

I recommend using Windows defender if you don't do a lot of web browsing or if you only go to the same 10 websites and don't use Facebook. If you go beyond that or value security over spending a little money, Sophos home and Bitdfender are both very good products but are a little on the paranoid side. The basic free Sophos home may also be an option, not sure I haven't used it yet. I started with beta testing the original Sophos home product and then the AI enhanced home product so I haven't had to pay for the full product stack yet. Each beta provided me with a free year subscription on top of the 6 months to a year of beta.

The AV comparatives site does give some very valuable information out, it is worth a look.

I think we are way beyond actually seeing any real slowdown on our PC’s due to AV running. That’s not really been a thing since 2009.

Commodo does the same thing they want you to use all their software and features.
However, you don't have too. You can use the free version for as long as you wish. There is nothing wrong with promoting their premium products, especially when they provide such an excellent free-to-use product.

almost any other brand name AV will be good, try and see which one annoys you the least. bitdefender is working well for me, no false positives and no annoying popups telling me to pay.

I use Windows Defender across all our six family machines because it's the least intrusive, free of charge and isn't bloat like most of the others.
On Windows 7 machines from customers, I always recommend MSE for the same reasons.

It seems like you haven't used symantec for a decade...
You are kind of right, my most recent dealings with it were on a Mac. It got totally corrupted and prevented the machine from using the internet including it's own updates or the ability to repair or remove itself. It was fun to fix. It always seems like someone I know has fallen for the internet provider gives it out free thing and they have issues with it. So yeah, I'm not a glutton for punishment. I haven't installed a Symantec product on any of my computers in over a decade. That does not however mean I haven't somehow had to deal with it in over a decade. While it has improved over the past several years, it is still not a very good product. There are tons of superior choices including the free ones that nag.

I haven’t gotten a false positive with it in the last 3 years. And I have yet to be pushed to the wallet or browser additions.

I think we are way beyond actually seeing any real slowdown on our PC’s due to AV running. That’s not really been a thing since 2009.
Like I said my son loves to try new games and I mess around with a lot of utilities so I've seen a few false positives. I had the full deal Bitdefender and I have a client(a small attorney's office) I put on it,
I had to manually disable the wallet a few times, it kept coming back following an update. I put in a ticket with Bitdefender and they fixed it. Overall, I am very satisfied with their product and the support they have provided.

However, you don't have too. You can use the free version for as long as you wish. There is nothing wrong with promoting their premium products, especially when they provide such an excellent free-to-use product.
Yes, it is like Avast, nagware. I used to recommend Avast free to friends and family but stopped because of the nagging. That is also why Commodo didn't stick around, I found alternatives that didn't nag that I could recommend as a free option. It is not that I don't think they deserve to advertise their paid product in a free one. It is that the action of doing so frequently confuses the technically challenged. This is especially true when they use statements like your computer is not optimally protected or may be at risk. Things like that upset the naive and uninformed. It makes them think they need to pay to be protected which most of the time is simply not true.

No, it isn't. It's freeware. Comodo's prompts to look at their paid products are built into the UI and are very unobtrusive. It is anything but "nagware".

They don't do that either. I personally use CIS in my home and have yet to see any such warnings or promptings.
