Antivirus Providers Continue Supporting Windows 7

Despite Microsoft ending Windows 7 support on January the 14th and declaring it End-Of-Life (EOL), most of the antivirus providers are still providing their services to Windows 7 users. With a large portion of the users unable to switch to the newer and supported OS versions like Windows 10, antivirus providers see a good opportunity to gain new customers that want to protect their PCs from the possible threats. Thanks to the AV-Test report we have a list of antivirus providers that are going to support Windows 7, and it includes all of the big players with a plan to support their software on Windows 7 until 2022. So some of the Windows 7 users unable to upgrade to the newer OS are going to be at least semi-protected against possible vulnerabilities, with exception of course for those found in OS level.

When it comes to the number one source of the threats, the browser, there is some good news there as well. Google plans to support its Chrome browser to at least July 2021, while Mozilla declared no official information about their support plans, however, if they behave as they did with Windows XP and its support ending, your Firefox browser will likely get some more mileage out of it.

Nothing really strange. For that matter, Avira still delivered virus definitions for Windows XP systems as recently as december 2019, although most other components, like heuristics, have been "frozen" since 2016.

Source: I know someone who works in the government, they still had this one machine running XP and connected to the Internet, running Avira antivirus. Legacy software that never got updated and on top of that the installation software was lost.

I wonder how many people are still running Windows 7. I finally updated my back up rig to Win 10 a couple of weeks ago. I waited until the last minute. It was hard to part ways with Win 7 just like with XP. Both were very good OS's imo.

Several municipalities in my country recently got ransomwared on older OSes. If I remember right in at least one case they paid out and in the others they hired consultants to unscrew everything... for as far as possible. I believe it took them quite some time, too :)

Go figure ;)

Considering that they are very much redundant (in in some cases, counter-productive) in post Win7 OSes, I say that continuing supporting Win 7 is not really a choice here, it's one last straw to hang on before drowning in (to?) obscurity (in the consumer market, at least).

With that said, why does everyone expect third party vendor to follow MS's EoL deadlines? Afaik that wasn't a common thing before, why would it be now?

I was going to say, didn't the AV companies support XP until recently?

Why would they dump 7 so quickly. Lots of Corporate boxes still running it. I actually have to keep Vista on one computer because the HD-DVD burner software doesn't appreciate.

No tears over not supporting 8 will be shed though.

I mean All MS should of done is updated the Bluetooth service and other features and that's it. W7/8 both still have the same Explorer UI from Windows 95! How hard is it to change a UI? Yes people don't like change like cars nowadays have all these new features like the car slightly moves if close to the line, Etc. With Windows 10 they should of have option upon installation rather having a improved UI or not but stupidity they are too lazy to finish the UI. They could of easily done this but nope

My mom's PC (which used to be mine before my Ryzen 1600 rig) is running Windows 7, lol. I really liked Win 7, it was like Vista, minus all the headaches. But in the time I've been using Win 10, I've grown to like it...for the most part, anyway.

I really hope you are not implying that the only difference with 10 is a different UI?

No, the other stuff stopped getting any updates a couple years ago. The only thing since then that MS has updated has been security.
