Larrabee is such an unknown factor at this point. Many disparage Intel due to their previous failures in the dedicated GPU market, but I wouldn't be too hasty in such preemptive judgments. I mean, in mid 2006 out of nowhere Intel gave us Core2 architecture and ever since then the competition has been barely catching up (AMD) or nearly gone from the desktop market altogether (VIA). So, is Intel going to pull another Core2 and stun everyone? Who knows. They certainly have the money for R&D to do it.

However, I'm nearly certain that nVidia has something under wraps to counter it. I mean, they gave us G80 and they pioneered the modern unified shader architecture. As for AMD (or ATI as many people continue to use that handle), I think AMD has other serious issues to worry about. Like not going bankrupt by end of the next year.

ATI is going to release their 5870 by this year end if everything goes to plan so they are sitting in a good seat right now, and nvidia is having problems with their GT300 yields so ATI is sitting with a smile more than likely, AMD is not in trouble, they were having problems catching up with the Core series like 1 year ago but Phenom II has pretty much solved that, the performance is close now. The GT300's are going to be monsters but are more than likely going to be massively expensive at their release just like nvidia always does.

The problem with intels "GPU" is that theres no solid info on how it will perform, and no-one knows when its going to be released, . . . . kinda like the GT300.

I remember when Intel came out with their dedicated 740 back at the end of the 90s in the heyday of when everyone was making graphics cards and DX first came about to challenge Glide and OpenGL as a 3D API. The 740 looked good on paper and while they are good at making processors, they fail at the ability to write good drivers.

Their drivers for onboard graphics hasn't seemed to improved much, if at all, over the past years so I'm not expecting anything great once it hits the market.......or ever. Also, don't care what driver team they have hired and brought in house either.

larrabees key factor is that since its all 'software' they can literally emulate any feature they want.

Oooh, DX11? emulate it.
DX12? emulate it. and so on.

Speed is the only limit, not features. Once nvidia and ATI get out fully programmable hardware like larrabee claims to be, then we'll see an end to the constant upgrade cycles of GPU's for features, and purely upgrade for speed.

Here's an interesting quote:

And if today's action wasn't hot enough for you, keep an eye out for Intel's (Symbol : INTC) Larrabee GPU chips next year. Intel (Symbol : INTC) hasn't been a force in high-performance graphics hardware since the early 1990s, but that should change with Larrabee. DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg waxes poetic over the product, saying that "Larrabee raises the bar of what we can do not just by 2X or 3X but by 20X."

This relates to the deal announced about a year ago where Dreamworks decided to go with Larrabee as their main (only?) processor.

Personally, I'll believe it when I see it.

So the software defines the features and not the hardware .... epic
