Any thoughts or advice on my build?

This is my first pc build (bought a pre-built previously), and I'm being quite overwhelmed with the number of things I need to research. For now, this is the build I have. My original budget was $1500-$1650 AUD, but now I have gone a bit over, due to the fact that originally I was going to buy a 5700xt for $600, but all the ones I can find in stock where I'm from (Australia) are for $700~, so at that point it just seems better to buy a 3070 which I managed to find at $970 and in stock, so that I don't have to upgrade for at least 6 years (hopefully). I play on 144hz at 1440p, and I'm looking to achieve at least that on any game I play with at least the majority of settings on high. Is the 3070 overkill for that? I was also planning to maybe get a 3060-ti, but the only ones in stock are for $900 so it definitely doesn't seem worth it.

Is the psu, motherboard, and ram good enough?

I already have a 512gb ssd on my current pc, can I just use that on my new pc? Will it be slower than a new one because it's around 5 years old and has a lot of files? 512gb definitely won't be enough for me, but can I just like buy a 500gb ssd and combined that with my current one somehow?

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this.

So over 50% of the cost of your system is the GPU? That's going to be a well balanced build...
Agree with above, that is a poor choice of motherboard and PSU. Drives you can always add later.
Also notice that Micron based RAM is the slowest option you can go for if you're doing a Ryzen build, all other things being equal going with Hynix or Samsung.
I'd look for some affordable Hynix based modules, like Patriot Viper Steel or something similar.

the PSU is a gospower special, I took a quick peak at the site and for the $10 more or less I saw the following

thermaltake bx1 550w - CWT build with rubicon 105c main cap and cheap Chinese caps in the secondary but the fan is decent and a five year warranty
antec neo classic 550w - similar to the CWT build used in the thermaltake but with cheaper (and louder) fan and 3 year warranty
CM masterwatt 550w - HEC build with 85c teapo caps with decent fan and five year warranty

none of the above would win a beauty contest and unless you expand your budget I can't (and didn't) look at anything better. If I had to go with one I would probably take the thermaltake or CM masterwatt.

There's also no way a 3070 with only 8 GB of vram is gonna last you 6 years..... unless you like Potato settings after about 3

Of the 30-35 (probably a underestimate) power supplies I've owned since 2006, only one failed...a Cooler Master. It took a very expensive motherboard with it too. Never again.

$1760 before tax, after cost-cutting on multiple cheaper parts?

This is the problem with DIY builds at this point in time. You can get better for cheaper from the OEMs. It's not always like this, but the build below is $70 more and a whole lot better on multiple fronts.

You can also go with a less premiere SI and save a couple hundred.

Personally for that kind of bank, I'd get this (actually I'd get the Intel version but w/e) :

i would HIGHLY recommend not buying that 3070 for $1000.

oh your from another country.
i dont know what your conversion is, but if the prices are marked up where you are, dont throw away that money. wait instead, or buy a RTX2xxx or if AMD is in stock, go for a 6800xt or 6900xt

my point is , here the 3070 is a $500'ish card, & foolish people are buying them for twice that, those people will feel dumb in a few weeks, or a month or two & either rationalize the purchase, or regret it , but whatever they do, it will still have been wasted money.

Seconded. However, OP is in Australia; $1K isn't as out of line as it would be in the States. Not that it's good pricing, mind...

whatever your nation of origin, take the msrp for that place, we'll call it 'X' . if the price the GPU is selling at is x+10%-15% or greater, dont buy it.

Not really relevant... OP is in Australia where everything cost 50%+ more vs US msrp typically.

Agreed; I won't pay the demand tax, either. Lots of folks apparently will, however, so here we are. Can't resist dropping some numbers, though. :)

RTX 3070 MSRP (according to TechRadar launch review): $499US/$809AUD
Least expensive in-stock US listing found via PCPP: $950US (+47%)
OP's chosen card: $970AU (+17%)

That's obviously above your threshold, but again, not everybody's as patient or tight-fisted as you and I.

What is a VRM heatsink? How important is it? Wdym by it won't last 6 years, because future games will be more demanding or because the graphic card speed will slow down dramatically over time? Thanks for the reply

3070 is around 770USD, and 5700xt is around 540USD here in Australia (the ones in stock). At that point, which one is more worth it? 6800xt is around 800USD here. Thanks for the reply.

VRM heatsinks are generally on the left and (if you have a second one) top of the CPU socket. See picture below. They keep the CPU power delivery components cool. Generally the presence of VRM heatsinks indicates that your board has capable of supporting high-end CPUs, overclocking, and extended high power draw without instability or overheating issues.

Currently your B550M board selection would be acceptable for an office PC, but even though it'll run your Ryzen 3600 just fine, it's a wise decision to aim for a beefier motherboard in case you decide to upgrade to a higher-end eight or twelve core processor down the road.

While you're at it, might as well look for a board that has four RAM slots rather than just two. That gives you the option of upgrading to 32GB of RAM in the future.

At least aim for something like the B550M DS3H if you're going for Gigabyte.
It seems to be about AU$30 more, but it's also a way better board.
Not only do you get two more DIMM slots which will matter if you want to add more RAM down the road, but also a second M.2 slot, so you can use two NVMe drives in the system.
You also get a couple of more rear USB 2.0 ports and a VRM heatsink, although sadly the same crappy ALC887 audio chip.

Someone put together a nice spreadsheet for B550 boards, so you can easily compare features and see what makes sense for your budget.

What??? There's audio chips to look into as well on motherboards?...... So how bad is the ALC887 audio chip? Will there be a noticeable sound difference between that chip and a higher-end chip for a non-audiophile? I am currently only using Bluetooth headphones, does the audio chips still have a affect on Bluetooth? Thanks for the reply.

Edit: Also, I am not going directly for Gigabyte, if there's a better board from another company I would be more than glad to take it.

I agree with the above. Look for a motherboard with VRM heatsinks and a stronger power supply. Although 550 W should suffice theoretically, the one you picked isn't the highest quality.

As for the motherboard, the Asus TUF, MSi MAG, ASrock Steel Legend or Gigabyte Aorus series are ones to look for.
As for the power supply, I recommend a 650 W Focus or Prime series unit from Seasonic, but I'm sure others have different recommendations as well.

Any of the ALC12x0 variants should be ok, but the ALC887 is pretty mediocre. It might not be something that matters if your headphones rely on a USB connection, be that wired or wireless.
The really cheap onboard audio implementations can also pick up a lot of background noise from the system, so you can get hums and other weird background noises.
If you're using Bluetooth, I presume you have a Bluetooth dongle already? Otherwise that's something to factor in. Not sure it's a good solution for PC gaming though, as Bluetooth audio has quite some lag.

I meant 450

but he only plans to use a 3600 which would pair great with the board and even if he decides to upgrade it supports Zen 3 as well and has a good VRM setup

the price is as good as it gets
