Are you completely sure the noise is coming from the video card? If so, what part of video card, if you can ascertain.

is it screwed down tightly at the rear of the case? is it seated snugly in its slot? any wires coming into contact with the card near the fan?

Me too. Sometimes when the its displaying a bright screen (say an open blank browser window), it gives out a faint high-pitched sound. Minimizing the window blanks that sound (I have a dark desktop, very few icons).

Some graphics cards have been known to buzz under certain conditions. It may be a coil that's vibrating or something to that effect. I've never come across the problem personally, but I've seen it happen.

It only happens when I go into 3d mode for gaming. On the desktop its fine. And I'm sure its coming from the card, I think its one of the tall looking caps on it. Its really annoying. My other 8800GT was dead silent. I wonder what could be done to eliminate the noise..

Its the coil what is buzzing. Sometimes you can see the coil and sometimes it is in a plastic case and it doesn't even looks like a coil. Nevertheless it emits high pitched sound. The sound is emitted when GPU draws high current, usually when in 3D mode or when entering/exiting 3D mode. Vista AERO (or Ubuntu COMPIZ) is perfect example. This high pitched sound is nothing to worry about, nothing will break because of it. I have my 8600gt buzzing for a while now.

@btarunr: are you sure the sound is not coming from your monitor?

Like Blue said, it's usually caps/coils reacting to power draw and that it POSSIBLY can mark the 'death' of the component, however from my experience, having had multiple GPUs that do this, it's never once resulted in lower performance or component death.

If it bothers you that much, sell it off and buy another and hope it doesn't happen again.

Mind does it too. (GTX260)

but only in certain circumstances.

it does it playing the intro clips to crysis. And it does it during atitool's artifact test. Also if I restart the PC, in the lul between screen off and back on.

no other time, even under 100% load. Its something to do with coil/cap whine or something. If I have my fan turned up i cant here it. I think most people dont notice it, only if you are clse to your PC and the fans are fairly quiet.

my 8800gt NEVER did that and i owned 4.

it could possibly be you cpu fan changing speed when your using hardcore applicantions/gaming

though if it's you gpu try using everest to see the fan changes...

i guess blue is right but that should'nt be happening

You ears need checking ;)

The sound can change frequencies, so therefore on lower loads the sound that comes out may be audible, but then once it hits full load, the sound that the coils generate MAY end up being too high for human hearing. Its very normal and I wouldnt fret over it.

nope.. i got my doctor's checkup and my ears are perfectly fine.

it could be because i manually fix my fan speed.

it does not make any annoying buzz noise whats soever though

TK's point is valid. It's 'happening' even when you can't hear it.

Which, for some it's only a worry when they do hear it :)

Most often I catch it when I'm runnin ATi tool, or any 3d application, where my FPS is soaring over 100. I.e. Crysis or a 2d game menu, where the Vsync is off and the frames are something ludicrous like 2,500.

One way to avoid it would be to us vsync :)

it could be because i manually fix my fan speed.

If you have increased your fan speed above stock it maybe that you just cant hear it. Like I said, with then fan on my gtx260 set at 60% i cant hear it unless I put my ear up against the side of the case.

but I find it wierd it only does it at certain times. It seems to do it, when you run a 3d app in windowed mode, and during the crysis startup clips. :wtf:

Same here with 8800gts g80 when ATItool artifact scanner is running. Nothing like that in games.

okay, i guess i have that to only i don't hear the buzzing noise haha :)

if a lot people experience what your getting, i guess it isn't an issue

@alex:

i've up'd my speed to 65%, other than a normal fan sound, i don't hear buzzes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8tsWn7_ALo

if you are getting that type of noise, then it is because your fan is on high :) i hear that too when maxing my 8800gt to 100% fan speed, but then it is risky i think

afaik it only seems common with nvidia cards. i never had anything like that with my 3870. Unless its into ultra-sonic for ati cards?
