Sooner than you think.

Watch out though, a whole host of third party are rebranding the reference cards. I see nothing different to them except the color scheme.
The other sets are the actual tweaked versions that you'd expect and they are cheaper.

I am still completely confused about how the think this is going to work. All the modified PCB/phase/overclock/binned products are going to sell for less than the reference card(s), and the reference cards are not binned.

This sounds too good to be true for us consumers.

An old marketing trick, jack the prices up, then offer a slightly lower price to make the offer appear good.
There are always those willing to pay the higher priced goods assuming they are better quality or more reliable.

Thing is, they're not better. The Founder's Edition really is just a reference card. This 'two chamber' or whatever heatsink system they use is noting new or spectacular. And they haven't qualified(have they?) what the 'premium' components are that exist on the PCB or in the die/chip itself.

This is what stumps me when the AIB are rolling out products where they do discuss what quality features they've added and better material used. Meanwhile the price is lower than the unexplainable FE cards.

I take back what I said - it seems the aftermarket FE cards are modified, at least in clock speed. What I cannot see is whether they are different PCB/phase/components. And if they are, then we really need to have full breakdowns of what exactly the FE really offers; otherwise there's no way you or I would look at like for like clocked graphics cards and say 'I'll spend $100 more for the "FE" edition despite having no idea what it offers me'

I get the feeling the higher price is just for Nvidia to more easily afford to offer them for the life of the model cycle, which they don't usually do. The ironic thing is, how can they even expect to sell them all, when the cheaper ones perform the same, and aftermarket cooled ones might even run faster and be cheaper? I think the only answer to that is they figure there will be a run on this model as big if not bigger than happened with the 970, so they'll have overpriced cards to sell when the aftermarket ones run out of stock.

All gets a bit confusing with items like this:

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/kfa2-geforce-gtx-1080-reference-blower-8192mb-gddr5x-pci-express-graphics-card-80nsj6dhk5vk-gx-087-kf.html

A KFA2/Galax "Reference Blower" card, £100 cheaper than the founders edition, and its on an nvidia branded ref pcb...
I saw that! So far that looks like the best card available haha!

Yep, seems like lunacy. It is why I queried earlier whether we could really be seeing something too good to be true.
Someone mentioned some type of marketing trickery. Though they might be underestimating the 'general' consumer these days.
