As the title says, anyone have it? Interested in it or wanted it and thoughts on the game play in general?

It's not bad, I like it. The update they just release changed a lot of the gameplay dynamics which, I think, was a net win. I enjoy games like this and for me, it was an added benefit that it runs on Linux (quite well I might add as it runs very smoothly a 4k.) Not all people like games like this but, if strategy games like this are your thing, you'll probably like it.

I've 370 hours into the game. It's a solid 4X game that has continued to get strong support long after release.

currently playing it. 700 hrs in. i average at one playthrough every few months or so: usually when big updates come out, i wait 1-2 weeks for mods to update, play one game, win or get bored, then quit. next update/DLC i'll play a new game. i am currently near the end of my playthrough and will proceed to quit the game again.

Game is great, by far the best 4x space strategy game I've played. even better than galciv2 which was my best pick back then. The game great from the start, two years after, it has gotten even better, countless updates have changed/improved this game so much that you can't even call it the same game from the last update(2.0 from 1.9), let alone back from 1.0. also as usual with paradox's games, it gets a lot of DLCs and expansions that is worth getting.

What's better is that it gives you things that you wouldn't usually see in other similar games. like playing as a pan-species faction(faction that allows more than one species to join), or playing as a species who eats other species, playing as a slaver, etc. you can even have quest-lines or interesting things to discover around the galaxy. it gives you literally every option you could think off. plus mods, the game has tons of mods. it has workshop support so installing them is very easy.

I like it, but try to stay away from it because I get addicted, and at some point will get bored.

Definitely give it a try if you like this kind of game

I have the game in my library, but I haven't tried it out yet.....so many games, so little time. I played the crap out of Galactic Civ II - probably 3-400 hours. Sounds like I'd probably do the same with this game. I just need to find time to actually play it.

Stellaris is great, it has a lot to offer. It offers a degree of freedom in how you build your empire that few other 4X games do. You can enslave, confederate, pacify, conquer... and all of it with a surprisingly good balance between those methods.

The 2.0 update offered some major changes and it elevates the game from a 'cool space sim' to something you'd also play competitively like Civilization.

I would agree with that assessment. I do like how they made influence a bit more important when it comes to expansion. Borders don't "just expand" anymore which is definitely interesting. It does feel like it has a Civ spin on it now.

Influence finally has the purpose it always should have had. Before, you'd be short on it in the early game when you can't colonize anything and needed the frontier outposts, and you'd constantly run at 1000 pts in mid/late game because there's little left to expand. It also stops the game from feeling so lacking in control during warfare. You can now really roadblock the enemy and guard territory effectively, it touches on so many aspects of the game, like positioning of fleets, the need to have multiple stacks etc.

I also like what they've done with edicts in that sense. Its really a trade off now as the edicts are empire wide and also cost influence, it supports the 'go tall or wide?' choice very well - as do the Starbases and their trade offs and ability to become immense energy production hubs. They even put in a much needed mineral/energy conversion method for late game in the shape of buildings. Yeah, nothing but positives to me :)
