Pretty sure it does not mean anything other than a name. Similar to Z28 Camaro, or Chevy Silverado LTZ Z71 pickup, or Datsun 280z or Samsung ZTE.

As for why? No idea, ask them.

This is not the lounge. If you do not have a proper answer, would rather be funny, or insulting, go somewhere else. Fair warning!

I think they are named this way for a few reasons, the first is that WiZZard has a thing for Z's and this is his "signature" on these products.

The second reason is to keep the program names very simple and related to what they do, yet differentiate them from the acronyms. You don't have to think too hard about what GPU-Z or CPU-Z do, or what they pertain to.

Just my thoughts

^ What he said. In English, "CPUs" and "GPUs" are pronounced with a "z" sound instead of an "s" sound.

Plus, it's more l33t to spell them with a "z". :pimp:

Thanks! I think your view is very reasonable.At first,compared to MSI gaming x,gaming z series,I thought X for extreme, Z for ultimate.BTW,what is l33t?

W1zzard has nothing to do with CPU-Z (older than GPU-Z), GPU-Z is his only -Z product (short of the brief and discontinued SSD-Z)

@W1zzard so, don't keep us in suspense! :D

I'm actually curious now
I mean, I was active during the first releases and remember him stating that as official naming reason. Can't be bothered to search it out though.

From Google:

The word "l33t" itself (also "L337") is really "leet," a corruption of "elite" and meaning someone who is very good at what they do. The opposite would be a "n00b" (short for "newbie").

You're gonna have to wait for @W1zzard to respond about GPU-Z. For CPU-Z, you'll need to ask the CPUID peeps.

It is most likely he just replicated the naming convention from CPU-Z since both software have similar purposes (enumerate and display basic information about the CPU(s) and GPU(s) in a Windows PC).
