Hello I'm new to the Techpowerup forums, I just bought a completely new rig part by part off ebay. I bought the coolermaster staker case with one xfx 8800gtx a ocz 700 watt gameextreme psu, an Asus striker extreme 680i board, and an Intel e8400. I seen the Asus striker about 6 months ago in a store and had to have it, it just looked so darn cool, so I bought it without doing any resurch on it (I know that was dumb) then after I got everything together and went to turn it on I get the "CPU INIT" on the back LCD read out.

I called Asus about this and they said a simple bios change would fix this, I am running the 0701 bios and they said that it would not work with the new 40nm Intel e8400 cpu's. So I cant boot the pc up to flash the bios so im stuck ordring a new bios chip from "biosman" which should fix the problem.

I started to do some resurch on this board and found that almost all user seem to hate the thing which shocked me, I thought for sure it was a good board because the price was so high for it.

So my question is how many Asus Striker users here on Techpowerup have Asus Strikers and have no problems with them, has anyone out there had one of these boards for more then a year with no problems? Also I tried to find out what version of the striker I have some say that 1.0g is bad? Were do I find the version number on the board I cant seem to find it.

@asusstriker,

I have a minor problem with my SE; I cannot get FSB and RAM overclock settings to stay set with the 1603 BIOS. The 1303 works very well, although I have an E6750.

I had to RMA three SE boards before I finally got one to POST (and it was not a BIOS issue with any of the three).

I hope you have the socketed BIOS chip, and not the soldered in one, otherwise you wasted your money for a BIOS upgrade.

I believe there is only one version of the SE - 1.00G. http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=24966&d=1176009488

Just because something is expensive, does not necessarily mean it is of superior quality.

Overall, I am fairly satisfied with the SE performance, but the amount of problems I continue to have with Asus 'Tech Support' is ridiculous.

I, personally, would also be somewhat hesitant to buy anything off EBay, but that is your choice. Are you able to return it for a refund, or at least an exchange? Did you get the warranty? There are much better motherboards available, and for less money.

@asusstriker,

Welcome to TPU! I have been running an Asus Striker Extreme for about 14 months now and have been quite pleased with it. My SE has been running an overclocked Intel Duo core 6700 and a pair of FG 8800 GTX cards in SLI without any issues. In fact, my original memory (2 GB of Crucial Ballistics) just went South about 4 weeks ago in the SE system, so I swapped it out with some spare Patriot DDR2 (PC9600) and it's been stable ever since - even picked up some additional speed.

I have been a fan of the SE and many Asus motherboards, since I've not had any issues that ever even required a call to Asus in the last 10+ years of using their boards. Their online support has been helpful and BIOS updates have been timely (I am running revision 1401). In comparison with other manufacturers, I think Asus is one of the best on the market and certainly a competitive value.

I echo the concern about buying a MB on eBay, that's something I'd be careful about.

Thanks, yeah I always make sure when I buy off eBay its from a highly respected power seller or someone that has extremely high feedback, I purchased my Cooler master staker case used and when I received it the thing was 100% flawless, not a scratch on it. So far eBay has saved me a good amount. My striker was a new board “tested” with a q6600, it did work with that CPU from what the seller told me and Asus also confirmed this that the BIOS I had would allow a q6600 to run but not the new 45nm e8400 cpu’s. My board has the removable BIOS chip. I made sure of that before I bought it but I’m still not sure if there are different versions of the striker and I would like to know if there are different versions other then the ones with the soldered on BIOS chips.

Any one else out there that is having success with the asus striker extreme? I hear all the 680i boards are trouble sum, I was looking at the Intel p45 and p35 boards but it looks like all the chip set supports is ATI cross fire and I would like to go SLI in a few more months, all I want is a good durable board that supports the 775 Intel 45nm and SLI and can overclock decent.

Ah thanks for that link Arctucas, I checked my board and found the rev number in the same spot its 1.00g. I just bought another board it’s the eVGA 680i sli board only 150$ it’s new off eBay (not refurbished) so I’m not sure what board I’m going to keep. I may keep both (one for a back up) cuz I really hate being down for 3 weeks for the RMA process sometimes a month. I know that probably sounds like a complete waist of money and it probably is but I did get a smoken good deal on both of these boards so I don’t feel badly about it.

@asusstriker,

An additional thought on flashing the BIOS, I'm not certain that you can swap out the BIOS chip without soldering the MB, but if you could borrow another processor of a standard variety, you can quickly flash it from a USB drive or floppy. As noted by Arctucas above, some BIOS revisions maybe better fits than others (especially above 1303), so an ability to easily change the BIOS (forward or back) is a great plus. I use a super cool (& free) tool available over on XS called Koda Key, which allows you to boot from a USB drive and flash any Asus MB (including the SE) to any BIOS version available (the author keeps them updated). Asus utilities are quirky about flashing back to prior revisions, but Koda Key works like a charm!

Here is the link:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=186538

Once you get your system up and running, this tool would help you flash the BIOS to experiment with different BIOS revisions above the minimum you need to support your CPU.

From what I have found, the biggest difference between the eVGA 680i and the Asus SE motherboard is that the SE has higher voltage settings for overclocking RAM, NB, SB, etc. than the eVGA.
