2009 I bought an OCZ 700w PSU (from newegg). This last week it finally died. I couldnt tell you the actual uptime but I know its well over 7 years since I basically let all my PCs run 24/7 regardless of crunching, folding, or mining. I have thanked the PSU gods that its failure did not damage anything else inside the PC. It just died with little fanfare, not even a puff of smoke or that oh so beautiful odor that ruins your sense of smell for several days. No visual notifications whatsoever. Fluke stepped in and told me it lost all circulation (0.42 volts) even with oral stimulation.

Oh well, 7 of 9 years is a good run for a failed company. I have heard tons of bad stories about OCZ as a brand, very few good ones, got any you want to share?

Their ram products were pretty slick.

The SSD debacle overshadows everything they did well, sadly.

yea their bobsledding run started making news not too long after I bought the PSU

Sidenote: For some reason, the branding reminds me of things I see Autozone or something. Like a car battery.

I bought one of their PSUs years ago and it failed after three days.
I sent it back to Newegg and bought a Seasonic instead.

The Seasonic still lives in my wife's office PC. (well after its warranty period)

No knowledge of OCZ except from the old days. 15-18 years ago. Big name in the enthusiast market back then. Their RAM products were only good thing they had going as I remember.

Only owned one OCZ item personally. Their DDR Booster. Ties into the 20-pin connector to power your RAM slots directly from the PSU. With a knob to turn up the voltage. Helped overclock my Soltek nForce2 system like mad. Still have all the pieces and will likely use them in my next Retro build.

I still have their OCZ power supply, works like a charm, apart from the fan which makes an odd noise. Will replace it soon but damn if it didn't serve me well, blackouts, brownouts, surges, still works.

OCZ's initial power supplies were pretty good but I think the quality dropped after a few years.
I had one that ran for 3 years and it died, got a warranty replacement and it lasted another year.

Have some old 1333 DDR3 OCZ RAM from the core 2 era that still works. It's like 1.7 v though so if I put it in anything modern it won't run unless I slow it down so it can be happy at the lower voltages.

Had an Agility 2 that was plagued with garbage Sandforce firmware. Not strictly OCZ's fault but not great either. Drive still works though in systems it plays nice with, I use it in my laptop as a boot drive.

My OCZ Vertex 4 with 256Gb has proven very reliable as my main boot drive ever since I bought it in 2012. It actually is still faster than my newer Mushkin Reactor with 1Tb which I got as a game drive, except for sequential r/w.

I remember when i first started out on the PC Enthusiast trail. I had some of their Platinum edition rams

oczplatinumram1.jpg

I think at the time I was dabbling with some Corsair XMS3200XL

ramrunning1024.jpg

which then lead me to some ludicrously cheap PC3200 Elixir Ram that would would overclock to PC4000 speeds with a little bump in voltage and 3-3-3-8 timings.

Then DDR2 started to be a thing and I bought some OCZ reapers and that machine lasted me YEARS. I dont think i did much toying around with that machine as i did with the previous one. I think i had it running in a Q9550 system.

What a trip down memory lane.

@FreedomEclipse: I guess it's save to claim that you already had RGB before it was cool :D Nice set of RAMs.

Edit: Although actually it is RYG.

I've still got some OCZ memory floating around, and still have two OCZ USB flash drive that I use pretty regularly. I bought the USB flash drives because they came with a lifetime warranty, which I had to use once or twice. But no warranty anymore obviously...

I remember a mod I did way back in the day consisted of "upgrading" an original ASUS eee PC by wrapping a bare OCZ 4GB Flash Drive PCB in scotch tape, and hand wiring it to the mini usb header on the bottom of the computers PCB, and sticking the whole thing inside discreetly. Worked until I sold it.

My sister comptuer still have OCZ RAM DDR2. I owned a couple of OCZ PSU, they were great. Z series Was a very good line of PSU.

as for SSD, people forget that OCZ sold alot of SSD, and the issue was mainly with Sandforce Controller, not OCZ device. We have a company that has alot of vertex 3 still running.

I too have an ARC100 in my laptop. It works fine for what it is. though I admit i dont really power up my laptop as often as i used to.. Its more like a backup machine should my main encounter any serious hardware failures that might see it down for a few days while waiting for replacement parts to arrive.

I remember back in the day when i used to have a dedicated machine built out of old scrap parts with almost zero market value and just toss it in the shed somewhere.

These days, if my PC is down for the count then i dont care too much about down time. I have a tablet that i use to read my manga and have access to my NAS to watch movies and stuff. Its not really a "Well, Shit....FML" kind of situation anymore
