I purchased the Aorus 1070 a week ago and compared the temps to my Gamerock 1070. The Aorus is around 5-10 degrees hotter while running at around 10% more fan speed. I just want to know if my card is defective. Both are 3 slot coolers while the Aorus has 3 100mm fans.

PS: I got the temps while running them individually in a case at the same speed.

JetStream coolers on 1070/1080 are hard to beat in temps/noise ratio frankly I don't know why you made that switch

https://www.purepc.pl/karty_graficz...gtx_1080_gamerock_brzydkie_kaczatko?page=0,17

https://www.purepc.pl/karty_graficz..._1070_xtreme_gaming_mocne_uderzenie?page=0,19

in the same testing conditions, 1080 gamerock at 2GHz runs at 69c while producing only 34dB of noise, while 1070 aorus at 2GHz runs at 67c while producing 42dB...
1080 jetstream slams 1070 aorus in temps/noise, no wonder your 1070 gamerock was much quieter and cooler at even lower TDP

Different card, different cooler... how are you thinking, or why are you thinking its defective based on things that arent alike????? Checked any reviews??

What temps is it hitting????

There are few reviews for both of these cards especially the Aorus. I likened it to the G1 Gaming TPU review.

The Gamerock is hitting around 60C and the Aorus is around 69C. Same clocks and fan curve. I just want to know if this is normal and if I have to have it replaced.

Different card, diffrent cooler, different fans...different temps.

As we said, twice, go find some reviews and see. It seems fine to me considering the links posted in the thread... did you read it???

I know. Seeing as they are both 3 slots it makes me wonder what the difference are or if I have a card that has some weird defects on it. Not every review displays temp delta over ambient and not every reviewer has specifics for each type of card. (i.e. TPU has a 1080 Gamerock Premium but no 1070 and a 1070 Gaming G1 and no Aorus. Completely understandable as it takes time and money to do review items and they cant get every model of everything)

I guess I didn't. I asked for assistance so I can ignore it.

So much passive-aggressiveness here. I asked for help as I value other people's opinion as I might be wrong. If I want to be berated for asking questions, I should have gone to 4chan.

Anyways here are the temps. I was using my phone and had no access to my rig when I asked the question.

Aorus @ stock (same fan curve)

Palit Gamerock OCed to match Aorus clocks (same fan curve)

As you can see the Aorus already throttled to a lower clock while using a higher fan speed. Every metric that would relate to having the card be hotter would point to the Gamerock. (higher voltage, higher load, higher TDP)

If you all say this is normal then I will believe you all.

Lol, that wasnt passive. ;)

Normal. Enjoy your card. :)

Hehe, if it's bugging him enough maybe he could swap the coolers around and see if the problem reverses lol, although if you try some thing like that make sure your not going void any warranty's.

Other wise what you said.

It's not broken or anything, it's basically a more premium GPU versus a (cheaper or maybe not cheaper) less premium GPU. Gigabyte isn't the best, no news in the west. ;) You buy the brand if you don't want to pay too much.

If you are sli or mining the top card will run hotter, thats just a given, if you are unsure add a fan in the case for additionsl airflow to the gpu.

I could understand if the card was running unstable at that temperature but it is not.

Cards are not in sli. I tested them individually inside my case. I managed to figure out what the differences are. The fins and some of the heatpipes on the Gamerock are are much larger. Basically, the Aorus has a heatsink designed for 2 slots only. It became 3 slots because they insisted on going with 3 fans which doesnt really help a lot in removing the heat from the sinks.

I also replaced the thermal goop that they used. Most of the paste they had used already solodified. I managed to reduce the temps by around 4 degrees just by replacing the TIM woth an nh-t1.

I think the "solidified" TIM was working as intended but it's cheap TIM anyway, good move replacing it.

first you need to check how good the contact between the chip and the heatsink, bad contact would bring higher temp, if you believe your chip is ok then check the cooler itseft
some temp monitor got err that bring you not the right temp, could be higher or lower too
cooling not only about the cooler itself
replacing thermal paste or improve your airflow can bring your temp lower

At first I left a little of the solidified TIM coz it was hard to remove but didint help the temps. So I had to scrape it off the die with a little force. I reckon it was causing the heat issue.

drying thermal paste? stock thermal paste is not good enough
then you replace it with something better? just dont forget thermal paste need a time

just dont forget thermal paste need a time
dont generalize, not all thermal interface material need beeding, or burning time, all depends brand and type, for example Arctic MX 4 does NOT need burning time, contrary Arctic silver 5 one that does need a 200H burning time...

So I had to scrape it off the die with a little force. I reckon it was causing the heat issue.
Thermal paste replacement was the final solution?
Gigabyte video cards usually have the worst TIM applications i have ever seen, mostly cuz i use and like 'em a lot, have done that to all my video cards after a week of purchased,

Gigabyte's never been known for top of the line GPU cooling solutions. I was under the impression that from their G1 cooler onwards it was quite a lot better... but yeah. There you go.

Thing is, Palit just has a massive heatsink on there. its big, full 3 slot and its got solid fans on too, and overall effective design, perhaps also the reason its super ugly :p Its that cooler, the MSI TwinFrozR and the Asus Strix ones that show the best performance all around for Pascal high end cards, and also some of the lowest noise numbers. Zotac also has decent temps but shit VRM cooling, and EVGA, well they had to revise it entirely because bad design (also VRM).

Amazing how logic doesn't dictate bigger heatsink is better. Now, while that isn't always true, the logical step isn't to wonder why after looking at the things.

I worry about people and their ability to do much independently these days...

As you said, BIGGER doesn't mean BETTER. Size-wise they are both 3 slots which would roughly mean they have almost the same cooling capacity. But the size of the aluminum fins on the Aorus hidden by a shroud hence you can't really tell its size without dismantling it. No reviews compared the two nor counted and measured the size of the fins. The Aorus has 3 fans which, theoretically, should help dissipate the heat off the fins faster and compensate the "smaller" size. I managed to figure out the problem and there was indeed a problem on the TIM as a large thick portion on the die had hardened.

I worry about people who hang out in forums just spouting a bunch of passive-aggressive insults borderline adhering to forum rules.
