While some people felt that the iPhone would crash and burn, it has in fact done quite the opposite. Of those in America that own mobile phones, 28% own an iPhone. While most people would wonder how a very expensive product isolated to a single network could possibly sell so well, market analysts see this rather large market share as a wakeup call to mobile phone manufacturers. Hopefully, we'll see less generic phones in the future, and more phones that will seem to be works of art more than tools of necessity (for some more than others, obviously).

Yes but for a company with only one phone ever in the smart phone market to take 28% of the market is a accomplishment within itself. I think Apple deserves a big congrats! :toast:

Yeah, huge difference. Still impressive, but I don't know a single person who owns one at the moment.

28% of all mobile phones is like 30-40 million of the american market.... there's no way AT&T got that much business, and Apple has probably sold tons fewer iPhones worldwide.

Apple could release a digital toilet seat (possibly called the I-seat) and no doubt people would buy it, I cannot see the fuss about many of the Apple I-branded products but I have to say the marketing and the styling is second to non, Apple truly are trend setters when it comes to design these days.

I wasn't knocking the fact, just pointing out a small error (that, depending on how you look at it, can be a rather large error).

Extremely impressive. Plus the bigger ones that came out today will probably increase the marketshare even more pulling all the people that held back due to lack of space.

The way I see it is...

There are the people out there who buy this expensive and innovative smart phone, there are people out there who don't know if it's it worth it but respect the phone, and there are people out there who sit back and make fun of the phone that has success written all over it.

I'm not saying it's the best phone out there by any means, that's just preference. However, one can't deny this phone is something to be respected in the world of technology IN MY OPINION. If you think you can do better engineering, than by all means go work for Palm, and good luck getting into a company who grabs 28% market share after its launch (more than even Apple predicted).

What exactly is innovative about the iPhone? There were phones out on the market with all the same features and more well before the iPhone went on sale.

Apple has done nothing new but they are good at marketing and have a lot more money to spend than other companies. Maybe some people like the design better than the others but what advantage does it offer other than the look that some may prefer?

Name one SMART phone on the market with a full touch display, no keys, and pressure sensitive, that was out when the iPhone was released.

EDIT: Or a phone that I fully integrated with iTunes and can play over 100 itunes songs...Or a phone you can rent movies full movies on? Or integrated visual voice mail? Over 9.5 hours of battery life, saying that with a full touch screen, and high resolution display? Shake controls for watching movies and pictures? Instant widescreen for photos and videos without having to press a button? Or a sensor that automatically turns the phone display off when it comes close to your ear? Ambient light sensor? Full Mac OS X? Unix app builders?

Plenty of innovation here, sure other phones have some of the features that the iPhone has, but the iPhone offers a lot of features other phones don't have. Apple is very innovative with its phone, no matter how much you wish to say it isn't.

Full touch display is a USP - Unique Selling Point - it's all about marketing

Yeah touch screens have only been around for what, 10 years?

High resolution touch screens have not been around in smart phones, or phones for that matter for 10 years. Nor have accelerometers or ambient light sensors, or shake commands.

Guess they just "forgot" to make it 3G/HSDPA then coz they were too busy implementing far more important USP's for this phone like "The Accelerometer" and "The Proximity Sensor".

The marketing guys sure earnt their money on this one.

3G isn't a requirement for this phone, nor any phone, and is IN MY OPINION a waste of money. Also, 3G isn't innovation, it's phone bandwidth.

Darn it man! I wonder what would happen if I named a company "Strawberry"? I'd bet I get 40% of the market!
Never cared for Apple myself... but hey, if a underdog can do what they do.. Sweet!

I know what you mean, but can a multi billion dollar company really still be considered an underdog? I presume you mean versus MS and Intel, but since they use Intel CPUs and can run MS OS now can this tag still be used?

The reason why I said underdog is the fact that a while back they believe that apple was going to close their doors and now look at them!

Okay, usually these typos are okay, but this one really needs to be changed -- there is a huge difference between 28% of the smartphone market and 28% of the overall cell phone market. I'm talking like 10's of millions here.

The iPhone's only sold a few million units by this time, which is -- oh, I don't know -- maybe 1 percent of the overall market?

Apple has sold 4 million iPhones:

http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/15/live-from-macworld-2008-steve-jobs-keynote/

So your estimation is flawed there.

Also, it should be noted that 90,000 iphones were sold in France in the first two months by Orange.
