Are 5870s still worth $150 or more???

I was just looking on ebay as I was thinking about selling my 5870s to upgrade. I was surprised to see XFX 5870s going for $150 plus. One with an Zalman VF3000 went for $200 (I mention this because I have two of these coolers but don't use them because I need the PCIe slots).

Is this correct or are these people insane??

Insane. Ebay is ALWAYS overpriced, because there is bound to be stupid people to pay high prices. I saw someone selling a HD 6950 for $125 on this forum like an hour ago.

$150 is ridiculous for a 5870. A 7850 can be purchased new for around $180 and should be faster.

I was going to tell you to look at the "sold listings" but yeah, you're right. For whatever reason (bitcoin???) HD5870s are consistently going for >$150 on ebay. Taking the most recent auctions into account the median sits around $175. :eek:

If you where to offer it on a forum I'd say that $130 is fair.

edit: I see some MAC editions in the listings... can the HD5870 be flashed with a MAC bios? if that's the case it might explain the higher price.

I also just missed buy a couple hrs. the XXX sold here while back :ohwell:

I was offered $175 local from a gaming buddy back in Dec, but he knew the history, and that it's 1ghz+/13xx, but..................................... :slap:

Well, the fact is, HD6000 and HD7000 series apart from the HD7950 and above, they aren't really that much faster and filled with features that aren't offered by the higher end HD5000 cards. And thats the reason why they still hold the price. They might be old but they still perform just as good and they don't really lack anything significant. And if ppl still buy them for such (high) price, then they probably think it's still worth it. And for as long as that applies, ppl will sell them for that price.

On the bitcoin front, they are pretty decent miners. I highly expect the bitcoin demand for 5xxx cards to slow down unless they get much cheaper. They are really inefficient.

Some ebay sellers do pitch the bitcoin angle for the 5870. Some numbers I found:

5870 380Mh
6870 300Mh
7870 460Mh

Still a 7870 would be a better buy but if $150 is all you've got a 5870 will do nicely and with some OC it might catch up with the 7870 (5870 runs at 860Mhz). I'd suggest the OP to sell it on ebay.

Ironically, on the bitcoin forums and bitcoin websites the bitcoineers will send a lot of low balls yet will buy from ebay at those inflated prices.

I sold mine for $150 about a month ago.
It was a XFX 5870. I also had the box and original receipt and was super clean so mine sold quick at $150.

Sounds like I need sell my Asus 5870 card to offset the 7870 Tahiti LE card I just got. Already sold the game bundle from it, so even if I could get ~$100-$120, it would make the 7870 nearly a free upgrade. Can't beat that!
