Hi all!

I would like to buy this laptop,so I would like to know if its specs are good,BTW it has a price that is around of my budget:

ASUS GL703GS-E5011

- Intel Core i7-8750H (2.2 GHz 9M Cache up to 4.1 GHz)
• 16GB DDR4 (1 mem.slot free)
• 256GB PCIE G3X4 SSD + 1TB 5400rpm SSH (8GB SSD Hybrid) Firecuda
• NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 (N17E-G2) GDDR5 8GB
• 17.3`` 144Hz FHD IPS (1920x1080) Non-Glare Wide-View
• 300nits
• G-Sync

How well would it play the modern games?

Especially ArmA 3 ,GTA V?

Its a very powerful laptop. but the price youre paying is over the top for something that is already obsolete or heading towards obsolescence at least where the GPU is concerned. You might be able to run a few games at 144hz with that 1070 but in a years time it probably wont be able to handle new games. If you dont care however, its still a good setup in general. that GTX 1070@1080p even at 60fps should last you a good while.

Its very expensive for what it is though.

If you want to get the most out of that laptop, i would sell the 16GB stick of ram and buy 2x8GB sticks because dual channel memory will help gaming.

I’d wait personally

Nvidia annouched the new RTX 2xxx series variants which will offer performance close to their desktop counterparts and still be effeiecent. That way you’d get your money’s worth and better performance to last you a few more years.

Edit: Actually they already launched so I’d definitely go with the newer models

Price difference isn’t much

I mean me personally I’d go for the strongest possible Laptop especially since laptops become absolete very fast

I think you'll be fine with that system. Yeah, sure, next year there will be a couple games that 1070 won't be able to push at +144 fps, but you'll still get enjoyable performance.

I'm starting to feel the lack of upgradability in my laptop. I thought for sure there'd be some reasonable upgrade kits, but no dice for me. I'd spend the couple extra dollars for something current generation.

They don't go obsolete that fast. It not the 90's and that laptop will likely last the OP a solid 3 years minimum.

I agree with this.

@HiTech_32
That is a nice system and with that CPU/GPU combo, it will play AAA titles for at least the next few years before it starts to show it's age. I'd fill in that extra RAM slot to enable dual channel mode(make sure to get a matching stick of RAM to the one already present) and get the best out of your memory performance. Other than that and an SSD get the system, you're good.

that's a very powerful Max-Q design laptop. More than enough to run all of the games at High settings comfortably. Unless, you can wait for the 9th gen Core CPUs with RTX Max-Q GPUs which might be coming out in a few weeks... well, you have the final say after all. :3
Edit: changing the single stick RAM into dual-channel setup & converting your SSHD to an SSD will give your system better response, faster boot up etc. All in all, that has enough firepower to replace a mid-range desktop PC & you still have the mobility to game on-the-go.

Good luck playing Arma and other CPU intensive games on a laptop CPU. 2.2Ghz base clock...

High performance gaming and laptops simply don't mix too well. Its expensive, it goes obselete 2x faster than a desktop and it tends to take a lot more maintenance to keep stuff in order (dust, CPU management, avoiding throttling).

Its not the 90's but a laptop is still a major concession and gaming is pushing hardware to its limits.

Real world benchmarks on some of those higher end mobile procs are still pretty savage if the laptop keeps the CPU cool. iirc, I was debating between the i7-6820HK in most laptops vs the 6700K in the Sager laptops. The 6700k edged it out slightly, but thermal throttling is a definite issue that I can only mitigate by undervolting aggressively.

If I were to do it again, I wouldn't mind today's mobile procs as long as reviews were able to show that a particular laptop didn't have thermal issues under load. That Core i7-8750H is a 6 core anyways. I doubt any unoptimized game is going to stress every core. Boost clocks will take care of any speed issues there.

Like others have said, I'd make sure that 16GB of RAM is two 8GB sticks in dual channel. You'd be throwing away a bit of performance otherwise. If it's a single stick, find a different laptop. I liked MSI's laptop lineup if you're not sure what else to look at.

The 1070 is already an outgoing GPU and has been superseded buy something newer. Some people may say that this makes it already already obselete. It probably wont be enough to push 144hz at its native resolution in a years time.

Why pay all that money for a feature you're not going to be able to use in a year or so? It's a bad investment unless you're rich.

Like I said... For 1080p@60hz he'll be fine for a long time. Won't make it any less obselete though. It was released in May 2016 and if it is the Max-Q version of the card then its performance is lower then that of the original 1070 mobile GPU. Time will only tell.

Youre free to disagree.

if you need one now go for it, one note is with that cpu, get throttlestop from TPU and undervolt the cpu, even -.125 and -.145 made a difference of thermal throttling at 96* vs now with the undervolt i've seen a max of 91* (most of the time it stays around 88* when gaming or doing lots of VM's) and no more thermal throttling, big difference in gaming due to that one change and helps battery life when you aren't gaming by a little bit...

@eidairaman1 said it in the 4th reply.

Well... seeing as it comes with a 256GB SSD anyway and an 1TB SSH hybrid drive its hardly a catastrophic deal breaker of monumental proportions like youre making it out to be. Though for the money spent on it, it would be great if it was a full SSD.

::EDIT::

Speaking of deal breakers -- no this laptop isnt a 'deal' to begin with... its overpriced tat.

::EDIT 2::

Also for a secondary drive, Id assume that 1TB SSH drive will beat out any regular 7200RPM drive once its algorithm is done and all your regular apps are saved. It wont beat out a regular SSD though. but its fine for a dump drive for a few non critical apps and games.

That means nothing. It's still a powerful GPU that runs all current games well and will continue to do so for at least a couple years.

Well you'll have to PM me the number of your clairvoyant in that case. You're more keyed up on this information than i am.
