After this comical drama, I was starting to think that people would revolt and start calling heresy on AMD/Intel for saying 2-4 cores that are really just the full fledged chip laser cut down as well. That's the funniest part I found about this, reminds me of the Phenom II days where you would have dual cores unlock into quad cores, AMD found out people were doing that and the next line of chips fully cut them off. Last I checked Intel pretty much does that for their down the line chips as well. It is what it is, this happens in every segment somewhere, it's just realizing it and causing enough of a stir.

this is totally different from what amd and intel do and amd always knew what would happen with those cpu's and allowed core unlocking on motherboards.. the whole reason those cores would be disabled was for quality control and binning.

Right...that's not really my point at all, I never said it wasn't an intention, more so making fun of it. Still trying to figure out my 970 routinely hits 3.65-3.7GBs of VRAM use when it's not supposed too so I'm being told. Also for people looking at running games in 4k and are concerned with the VRAM, for one the shader power is likely to fall short on either AMD or Nvidia side at that resolution, even with Sli/Xfire you're probably pushing it a bit on newer games. I just think it's a bit foolish how greedy people are for 4k gaming with placebo ultra settings. Until we see stacked VRAM our memory bandwidth already means nothing at those resolutions.

Any ASUS Strix GTX 970 owners that are not happy with their card can PM me for possible purchase. I'm in the market for 2 cards right now. I won't pay retail, but it will be easier to deal with me, than to fight with ASUS.

Now this is coming from an AMD fanboy. I would still get the GTX 970, if it wasn't the price at what it is in my country. Around 525$

tho i wonder why the 980 doesn't have that problem afaik it use the same 256bit memory bus, shouldn't the memory allocation be the same?
GTX 980 doesn't have the problem because nothing is disabled on the full fat GM204. The memory allocation issue occurs because a one of the 8 ports to the L2 Cache/ROP units is disabled.

TL;DR 970 has 13/16 of the SMM and 7/8 of the L2 Cache/ROP units that the 980 has.

It's more like having 18 aisles to 18 tills and 17 till operators. The catch is operator number 17 has to jump between the 17th and 18th till.
All the tills bar the last one operate at full speed permanently, but occasionally when til 18 gets used, it slows down the speed of til 17 and 18. The other 16 tills aren't affected.
I don't think that's true. The reason this issue was picked up was because operators 1-16 have to wait for operator 17 to till aisle 18, if I were to continue your analogy.

I hatefully voted the first option ... I know I'm going to buy a new GPU soon to move my GTX770 and GTX660 to other machines. I hate the fact that GTX970 with its funny memory config is still my best choice from cost/performance perspective ... in other words I wish that GTX980 was more affordable.

do you look at prices and benchmarks? the 290 has been the best bang for your buck for some time... go higher and watch out for those diminishing returns

I wasn't really interested to begin with. Even if I was planning to purchase a 970 the whole "controversy" with the card isn't something I find to be relevant. The card has been out a while. It has been through just about every review possible using various games, apps at various resolutions. All the numbers and facts about how the card performs are there and that's all that matters. I find it hillarious that so many are going with the "Nvidia was dishonest" option. Sure, they were dishonest, but that doesn't change the fact that all of these people saw the performance numbers and never thought... "Gee, this card must not be using 400 MB or Vram. XXX benchmark should of gotten 2 more FPS!" Didn't happen, this controversy is irrelevant in terms of what people thought they were buying.

Fortunately, it seemed to have pushed a price drop from the competition for some reason or another. Good!

yeah I really think just disabling the segment will solve everything.. seems to be it will run out of horsepower before vram most of the time anyway.

I'm liking the price drops too.. really temped to pick up another 290 and a 1440p monitor but I'm not exactly sure how freesync is going to work.

Still one of the best cards on the market regardless of the dishonesty.

Keeping mine and also hoping to nab a open boxed second for cheap.

Pretty much yes, it's still the card to go for 1080p and 1440p. I'd guess some 4K folks might think twice about it an get a 980 instead.

I'll personally try to fetch one for cheap for my HTPC.

Fine card but 290 is not an option for me, I use air cooling and try to keep as quiet as possible because I don't like wearing headphones.

My 970 still performs the same. It has the efficiency and performance I want, especially in folding@home. If I were looking right now for a new gpu I think I would wait for the new amd cards, but not because of this.

99% of the world population will not notice the slightest degradation of performance in games or other problems knowing that the specs are not those declared.

You will play for a long time all of you who have bought a GTX 970.

Even the GTX 960 with his "only " 2 GB of GDDR5 memory the majority of the people will not see any problems/issues in future games.

I agree,

With the majority playing on 1080p and enthusiast imploring not to run your graphics card pass 1080p. The majority would never see those issues.

Although you have to wonder if a console would serve those best.

I think enthusiasts tend to take all games and articles they read into consideration with recommendations. there is games that a 280x can get the job done at 1440p or even 4k.. there is a lot of stigma with games having bad ports for pc.
