Artifacts, yay...

Was planning on trading my old HD4850 to a friend. I put it in to make sure it works before I send it off. Everything was going fine. I started FurMark. A couple minutes in it decides to BSOD with pagefaultinblahblah. When it reboots artifacts galore. http://imageshack.us/g/641/1002020.jpg/ It didn't overheat, I know that for sure. Is this type of situation salvageable?

Check the contacts and make sure theres no build up on them.
Also make sure your power cables are in all the way.
Make sure you have correct drivers for that card installed.
Other than that those pics dont look good.

That sounds like bad video memory

artifacts in POST and BIOS are ALWAYS bad sign!.

Same as a 4870 i have here, exact same issue. Its a solder problem. I got a heatgun, ran it over the card for 10mins, problem disappeared.

I have read that baking is a TEMPORARY solution and the problem will came back sooner or later but right, you have nothing to lose (well, maybe the oven with toxic fumes, I would rather choose the heatgun though).

Though I still think that is a VRAM issue.

i had a couple 280's that died on me like that with similiar artifacts, a slight underclock fixed it, corrupted memory was the culprit. if u can flash it with lower clock speeds, might be salvagable. Infact i just gave away those 2 280's just yesterday to a friend of mine who want to try messing with them to save them.

Im leaning towards the gpu memory is pooched. Baking it wont do a thing but waste your time.
Baking is if solder joints have come loose on the board but hey one never knows :cool:

+1 to baking it, I've resurrected a few cards with the oven. I even had an 8800GTX given to me from a co-worker that also had artifacts on the POST screen that was cured and converted to folding@home use 24/7 afterwards.

I will if i get time later ill post a few pic's of what my card is doing, and then ill post a pic after i have put the heat gun to it. Ive yet to realy heat up the card (200c) to start to melt the solder and see if the card is then fixed for good, at the moment all i have done is heat it up to 100c for 10mins, put it back into the comp and it worked fine for the rest of the day. But went back to the same artifacting crap the next morning.

Ill keep you posted.

Ok sorry for taking so long, but i have here some before and after pictures to prove that its a solder problem and baking the card should fix it.

I have here pictures of my card before i hit it with a heat gun and then after i hit it with the heat gun.

As you can see there is a big difference and just after 10mins of heating up the card i could then fully load into windows and install divers, before that it would refuse to load windows period.

Those artefact pictures remind me of a card like this just the other day.

I've loaned my friend a very old AGP system (Abit AN7 mobo and AMD XP3200+ CPU) for basic internet access, where my GeForce 4200Ti graphics card died.* I put in a replacement GeForce 7600 and that bugger didn't work either. It was fine a while back, but now boots into the BIOS just fine, then artefacts with vertical bars and all sorts of strange shit when it hits windows. :mad:

It's not sensitive to flexing, either.

Had to fix the problem by buying a new GF6200 512MB AGP for £40 (a choice of one card only). Silly money to throw away on this old system. :ohwell:

IMHO and what I've read on net, the baking procedure is a temporal fix, the only way to fix it "properly" is a reballing equipment like some companies do with those Nvidia defective chips on laptops.
