I am thinking about getting this ASRock motherboard:

My budget is $160 and this board seem to have the features I want and price.

I am curious, is ASRock a good brand?

What are their motherboards known for?

ASRock has matured as a motherboard maker. That particular board has decent quality. Go for it.

i have used a few asrock boards in some build with nice success. still operating stabily, not always great overclockers though.

I`ve had two assrock boards. The lan failed on the first and the ram slots (some of them) failed on the other. Not much worse than biostar or gigabyte , but not better either !

or not what two boot up at all just hang in bios,

The only ASRock I ever used is a damn tank(still used in the garage). Never crashed, and it has an upgrade port so u can throw in a huge card that has an AMD 64 on it.

They're definitely not the best brand to think of when looking for a solid board. But as bta said, they have definitely been expanding into the realms of the enthusiast category motherboards. So they shouldn't be to bad these days, but, if you can afford an Asus, EVGA, Gigabyte board(not that those are the only good brands), then i'd go with one of those instead.

ASRock boards are fine. I still have mine in my GF's rig and it's be a great board. No complaints.

For that much or a bit more, you should be able to get one that will do 16x when 2 gpu's are installed.
My old $85, Asrock A785G-LE/128M scored a very respectable 12450 3dMark06

I sold a pc to me m8 with an old asrock board and its still going strong, Must be a good 3 or 4 years old now to, The only prob with it is one of the usb ports has died but that was me m8's fault.

Asus is ASRock's parent company. ASRock generally aims for value (cost to performance ratio). In the past it seemed to offer many cheap products of questionable quality, but in the past year or two its products have gained more respect.

Exactly, A good few years back i had a bad time with both asus and gigabyte and as my budget was low i ended up getting an asrock board that is still working today, I was also going to buy an asrock for my current pc again due to funds, The shop diden't have the asrock in stock so i ended up with a gigabyte EP45-ds3 and i can honestly say its a good board.

Check out reviews and make your choise carefully. If you feel the asrock has what you need and can do what you need it to then go for it.

As with all hardware there is no way of telling what will last or what wont, The asrock could last you for years where as a gigabyte or msi or asus could die in months, Or it could be the other way round, The asrock could die in months but a gigabyte or asus or msi could last years.

AsRock boards are fine, I have an AsRock X58 Extreme which works fine, but my Gigabyte X58A-UD3R is a much better OCer

AsRock is my OCZ of PSUs though, they work fine, but don't expect more

i've had my ASRock Mobo (In Specs.) and haven't had any issues. nice OC as well for just a SB700 based Board. have my CPU @3.3 which is nice from 2.6

I've had nothing but good experiences with AsRock boards in the past year or so since I've started using them. I still prefer an ASUS board though, but the AsRock boards really give a good value for the money.

Got an ASRock X58 Extreme mobo myself. Rated Tom's Hardware pick of 2009 for a reason. Most Newegg reviews are very positive of it. ASUS has improved the quality a lot like others say. Haven't used it yet cuz I'm still waiting for the i7 950 to be $200 @ Micro Center.

ASUS and ASrock are essentially the same company. (They are sister companies, ASUS is not the parent). Asrock does some some good stuff. I've had some great mainboards. They do two kinds: cheaper than competitor, and also "out of the box designs": like my s775 with AGP.

Why does the parent of ASUS/Asrock run two different brands? There isnt a simple answer to that. It is a combination of internal competition (good thing), running different product offerings for different markets (and avoiding grey market imports), and organisational/political reasons.

In my experience, I've actually had better reliability with my ASrocks than my ASUS's. And their warranty programme is just as good. So if you like the mb, go for it.

They are at 230$ at MC, you can't ask for much more

The budget AsRock 785G board I have in my HTPC has been rock solid. I don't know why people experience motherboard deaths, even crap Foxconn boards paired with even crappier power supplies in prebuilts don't die so often. I've personally never had a motherboard die on me and I've had over 10 the past year.

I have an ASRock A785G board and it is VERY solid! it unlocked my Phenom II X3 720 and OCed it to 3.8ghz stable under a H50. This board has been a great little board for a budget gamer or HTPC
