The board probably defaults it on. I've got a few Asus boards that do that. But generally go right into bios when hitting F1.If he aint using raid it should be turned off...
Since the bios is in question (possibly), he can grab a new chip from Bios depot (search ebay) for pretty cheap with whatever revision he wants on it.
