ASUS EAH4850 Issue

Hey Guys,

I finally upgraded to a ASUS EAH4850 512mb Graphics card, only to run into a VPU recovery issue, every time I try to play a game I manage anywere from 5mins - 1hr of game time before I get an message stating that the VPU has been recovered, the GPU is running stock and has not been modified. System specs are below;

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 @ 3.40ghz
RAM: 2GB OCZ Reaper PC6400 @ 1055mhz
MB: ASUS P5N-E SLi
PSU: Seasonic S12+ 650W
HDD: 250GB & 500GB & 320GB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm

If anyone can help me out it would be appreciated. Oh and I'm running the latest drivers if that helps.

Impossible it could be conflicting with any other hardware.

There's a few things that could cause your 4850 to VPU recover frequently.

1. Overheating, since you said its running stock maybe you haven't changed the fan settings.
2. VRAM could be faulty.
3. Chip could be faulty.
4. The card is faulty.
5. Your PSU could be faulty.
6. Incorrect install of drivers

How are your temps? If they are fine, then I suggest you not do anymore to the card, do not flash its bios nor remove the stock cooler for you may need to RMA it.

And if you can, try it on a different computer and see if it works.

check to make sure the fan is running, Newegg has a ton of reviews about the asus and fans not working or barely on... I would check with ASUS for a RMA on it, or a possible solution

Idel temps are 49-53 degrees Celcius, The card seems to be fine, otherwise I might just RMA it, My PSU is brand new and my previous card works perfectly with it, drivers have been reinstalled a few times I've also tried different drivers. I'll give it a try in my second computer and see if it still has issues and if it does ill RMA the card.

Fan is running and i've pumped it up to 100% to see if that makes a difference

That issue is with the TOP variant only.
He has the reference card/cooler. So that wouldn't be an issue... look at the card, make sure the heatsink is seated good.

Been over the card the heatsink is mounted perfectly and I was planning on buying a new heatsink anyway.

Downclock it... drop clocks to 500Mhz Core/750Mhz Memory. Bout all I can recommend atm... if the artifacts go away after that... RMA the card.

I'm not getting any artifacts, all i get is a message saying your VPU has been recovered.

ok... so it still does it even at that speed? wow.

Then seriously try a driver re-install. Un-install the current driver, restart... re-install. If it still does it, RMA the card.

I had the exact same problem on my 4870, I found that Idle temps were around 49~53c with %60 fan speed on auto. I monitored this in game and found that after only 5 minutes the temp had jumped to around 75c and would then slowly keep going up.

There was nothing wrong with the fan, its just a hot card and I live in a hot place. I have solved this by mounting a fan on the back of the card. I now idle at 45c with %50 fan.

Its not great but at least I only get a VPU recovery once every few days or so now as opposed to every 5 - 30 minutes.

I plan on getting a much more powerful fan mounted as soon as possible, I tried this already with a fan I stole off a CPU and found that it drops idle temps another 2~3 degrees, So i'm betting it will completely solve my issue

I've already ordered a new cooler for the card its an Arctic Cooling Twin Turbo just waiting for it to arrive, but the last couple of days have cooler than usual and i havent got the error so the new cooler should do the trick.

Yes it was an Nvidia card, but I formatted my PC when I installed the new card so its on a fresh install of XP.

But thanks for everyones help I think this was occuring because of heat and now I've ordered a new cooler and this should solve the issue.

Tried it, still the same issue but it hasnt happened in a while now so i think it was down to overheating.

Sometimes I found that the VPU recover thing would kick in when it wasent actually a Video card issue but in my case it was a memory subsystem issue 9where the card communicates with the system), in my case my system memory was unstable, try running OCCT stress test on your memory to see if it is completely stable, sounds strange I know.

Ya whenever i put Drivers in i turn off VPU Recovery and WIndows Auto Restart so i can see what type of error i encountered.

i have the same card, and the cooler is great, keeps temps below 60 when running crysis. the stock cooler on the asus maybe the best there is, i wouldn't bother changing it. looks like u got a faulty card, but lets see what happens when u try it in a different pc first

Tried in a different PC and still getting the same issue I think its time to RMA the card.

lol i was getting the same errors i fix it up , just no installing the CCC catalyst control center, just the ati driver an problem solved, i have a MSI HD 4850 T2D512

if possible use older version of CCC or even get the drivers off the Card Makers Site.

Take the side off you pc and shove a house fan next to it, see if the problem happens, then put the side on and turn the GPU fan to low and see if the problem happens.
