Hey all, hope someone out there might be able to help with this - I have an ASUS P8Q77-M mobo lying round doing nothing and was hoping to chuck a 4C/8T Xeon into it to turn it into an unRAID server.

My problem is that the Xeon I can get my hands on is the E3-1240 v2 but the mobo support list only lists the E3-1230, E3-1230 v2 and the E3-1245 v2 as supported from the Xeon product line so the question is - would the mobo support the 1240 v2 as the only diff between it and the 1230 v2 is 0.1GHz, and between it and the 1245 v2 is integrated graphics?

Hope someone can help, thanks in advance all!

Go to the asus website, get on the horn with live chat and ask them that question.

Check for bios and beta bios updates too

More than likely you can just toss it in and it'll work fine

It will be fine. There are a lot of different models of Xeons and all are supported.

The bigger question is whether your BIOS supports v2 in general. As long as it supports v2, it will work.

The reason it probably doesn't list your specific CPU is because it doesn't have onboard graphics since without an integrated GPU the motherboards video out will not function. I bet a dollar that it will work fine though as long as you have a descrete video card

The bigger question is whether your BIOS supports v2 in general. As long as it supports v2, it will work.

v2 should be fine as the CPU support list has 3 Xeons on it and 2 of them are v2 SKUs.

The reason it probably doesn't list your specific CPU is because it doesn't have onboard graphics since without an integrated GPU the motherboards video out will not function. I bet a dollar that it will work fine though as long as you have a descrete video card

Again should be ok as 2 of the 3 listed are CPUs without integrated graphics.

Tried live chat but kept getting a message about the agents being unavailable... might just take a punt as it's pretty much the same as a 1230 v2 but with that extra 100 MHz.

I've been eyeing one of those off for my Asrock Z77 and it's on the supported list for that board. They may have released the supported CPU list prior to that CPU being made available.

Might need to be on at another time or try a different region, perchance you may need to try monday

I have a Xeon 1231 V3 which lacks An IGP, however mine is listed in my motherboard support list, but im sure you'll be fine.

Good luck

edit
this Asus support list (on game debate) shows that the board Does indeed support that CPU, (disregard the !'s they are next to each listing) LINK here
Everywhere I look at shows that your chip at supported but that certain functions are not available
