Hi,

My son has ASUS Prime X470 Pro MB and he's trying to upgrade BIOS for Ryzen 5000- series cpus. He said the MB supports it.

The problem is filesize of the bioses. It seems the newer ones are twice the size of the old ones. So cpus above Ryzen 3000- series are not supported and update is impossible.

Are there several versions of the mainboard and/or BIOS chips? Could it be changed for bigger one? How? Where to get it (in Finland or Europa)? Or is he stuck with 3000- series?

Thanks,

Tommi

Read descriptions

Read the friggin manual on how to properly flash the bios. Even the 5950X, and 5800X V2 (3D) is supported, if you're not sure go to a shop.

It is a support matrix though, it even tells you what bios version that is needed by the board to support a particular cpu. The link goes straight to it.

Yeah, copied it even 2 times and it does paste in in somewhat misleading way... :)

Yes, i (and my son) know how to flash the bios. Nobody reads the questions or anything but topics anymore? Newer BIOS files are bigger than the BIOS chip on the motherboard. Like 32Mb file to be fitted in 16Mb space...

Question remains, is it possible to change the chip and how to.

Hello, there! Don't make assumptions, download the BIOS file and just check, what's inside. When I flashed my (also Asus) MB recently, there was also other stuff in the zip, which I actually didn't use or need (some BIOS renaming software).

Sure, the very same applies to you, friend... :D
Please show me where in the link you posted it shows that "cpus above Ryzen 3000- series are not supported" as the OP claimed.

I won't hold my breath.

No they aren't. Where the actual fuck are you getting this information from? @weekendgeek has already posted a screenshot demonstrating you are completely wrong about the size, others have already posted a link demonstrating that your claim about lack of support for Ryzen 3000 and 5000 series is competely wrong, are you blind or are you just trolling?

Hold on for a moment, you just asked for a CPU support 'matrix', if I'm not mistaken... :p

No they aren't.
Yeah, this wouldn't make any sense at all, right! That's why I wrote OP to check, what's inside... :)

You have no need to change the firmware chip, flash it by reading the manual

@Hattu

Stop overthinking and just do it

Or go to a shop.

Yeah, that's the spirit! Uncompressed the whole shit, ignored the redundant stuff. Copied to a pendrive, restarted. Entered BIOS. Selected Aflash2, or whatever, don't remember anymore. Browsed to the file on my pendrive, MB accepted, presto! Reboot, and was good to go in a matter of a few minutes... :D

Descriptions would suggest to do an OPTIMIZED DEFAULTS reset afterwards, but as an ignorant Hungarian, I just wouldn't do, even that... :p

Well, this list indeed shows several 5000+ CPUs. I just can't be of any more help, sorry... Please do take a thoughtful moment before trolling on me, and posting BS. Sincere thanks, Mr. Universe! :p

I would do it before a bios flash, then after, just my protocol to avoid any problems

Found this looking for Bios chip size. Found it on the official mobo page. https://www.asus.com/Motherboards-Components/Motherboards/PRIME/PRIME-X470-PRO/techspec/

If it goes away (not unusual):

BIOS

256 Mb Flash ROM, UEFI AMI BIOS, PnP,SM BIOS 3.0, ACPI 6.0, Multi-language BIOS, ASUS EZ Flash 3, CrashFree BIOS 3, F11 EZ Tuning Wizard, F6 Qfan Control, F3 My Favorites, Last Modified log, F12 PrintScreen,F4 AURA ON/OFF, F9 Search and ASUS DRAM SPD (Serial Presence Detect)memory information

So it's 32 megs. I don't know where the 16 megs came from. Maybe some MSI mobo? I'm pretty sure my last mobo from Asus 10 years ago had 16 meg BIOS. Asus is usually good about that. Rocking the X470 Prime Pro now, with Ryzen 5600X.
