My Asus Crosshair went up in smoke today and took my 8350 I just grabbed with it :(. It started smoking directly above the CPU. I believe that area is the VRM's or Mosfets, not 100% sure.

I had just installed an H100 cooler and was getting an FF code and no post shortly after. Took the system out of my case, it posted. Put the mobo back in the case, wouldn't turn after a few tries. Tried once more, smoke.

I was heavily overclocked with all power options at max. My biggest worry is that mx Hx750i caused this, so I'm avoiding using it for the time being and using a CX500. The thing is I used the HX to post it while it was out of the case and it worked fine.

Doing a bit of research it seems like that area of the mother is not super uncommon to go up in smoke, and the motherboard itself is usually the culprit. Should I still use my Hx750i? How would I know if it's ok to use...ugh.

It stands to some reason that you probably broke/damaged something accidentally while installing the cooler. If it worked before you touched it. And it doesn't work afterwards. Then 2 + 2 = 4.

So I wouldn't suspect the PSU.

Probably fried the VRMs since watercooling takes the airflow out and you noted you were heavily overclocked.

MrGenius I already feel terrible about myself no need to rub it in lmao...Thanks though. I'm going to try the PSU still.

Yeah, I think you are right toothless. I am reading more into and the symtoms are the same. Froze in a benchmark, FF and no post, soon as voltage was put on them again, poof.

Deepfried and burnt. Does it smell good?

My desktop smelled like maple syrup and pancakes once. I gotta ask these questions; it's my job.

It smelt like 400$ melting away... Arghh.

The 8350 is definitely done for. Stuck it in my Gigabyte Mobo...Infinite loop of death...wait could it need a BIOS flash..nah it's probably gone.

Google crosshair v overheating. Well known issue when overclocked and running a water-cooler the vrms overheat. People need to learn to run airflow over heatsinks

Lesson learned. I moved the liquid over to my Gigabyte 970 setup. Hopefully this will cool keep those VRM's cool.

It's definitely supported on the Gigabyte 970-D3P, have you cleared the CMOS?

No no. This is on the gigabyte mobo. The 8350 is looping but my 6300 is good. My biggest worry is putting in my HX750i again...I hope that things ok.

It's definitely supported on the Gigabyte 970-D3P, have you cleared the CMOS?

I didn't try that. Worth a shot.

Noway. I'll be overclocking this thing to 4.8 again at least. I made a mistake. I've been doing this for a long time. Since i had to switch jumpers to overclock. Never did liquid cooling though and the components up top didn't cross my mind.

I bought this Crosshair and 8350 used. My plan was to switch up my 6300 and mobo and sell it to make some cash while upgrading at the same time. Unfortunately that didn't work out. Not beating myself up over it anymore.

Oh and the Hx750i is good to go. RAM made it out alive as well... No post on the 8350.

Benchmark Scores bench...mark? i do leave mark on bench sometime, to remember which one is the most comfortable. :o
annnd a batch of cliché on AMD ... thanks ... altho the 400$ that wen up in smoke is a bit high for a price ... i.e: i paid less for a 990X+8350 than my actual i5-6600K alone (about 65-70% of the price )

what i suspect ...
I was heavily overclocked with all power options at max.
all option to the max is not heavily OC ... it's heavily unappropriated ... did you push all slider to max and hoped it would not fry ?
if yes : not AMD's fault ...

my actual setup has no fan on VRM, since the one on the RAM and on the back exhaust is enough (also all my radiator are in intake ) it's the intel build but the setup was the same on the previous AMD one it housed

2nd example on a S775 board with a E8400 OC to 3.5 (well fan on the top does the job )

Yeah, I apologize for the incoming AMD flak. For anyone reading; This was my error. I was heavily overclocked. 5.2Ghz. 1.52 Vcore. Every rail was on extreme profiling. North bridge and Vcore in red zone.

You arranged your liquid cooling to intake, why is that? Aren't you effectively pushing the hot air back into your case? Or are you doing it to promote airflow?

I'm in Canada not America. Computer parts are very expensive here. 600$ dollars for the Mobo and CPU right now at retailers. I got a deal with a Corsair case, 16 gigs of RAM, power supply, and 4 Noctua fans for 400$ Canadian. It was a good deal.

I'm going to RMA the board as I feel something should have kicked in to prevent this from happening. The thing also has massive heatsinks all around it that were cold to the touch after this happened (Bad contact?) The CPU will be sent out as well. It's worth a shot.
