Hello. I received an Asus ROG Striker Extreme (LgA775) as part of a large untested lot. I am pairing it with a Q9550, 2x2gb pny ddr2, Radeon x1650, focus GX750.

The board lights up when I plug in power. The green power led illuminates, the power, reset, and CMOS clear buttons light, and the backlight to the postcode screens lights. The postcode screen is blank, however.

When I press the power button, it usually does absolutely nothing, but after a few presses I can get it to do something.

Sometimes all the fans spin at full speed and stay that way untill I power off. There is no power to USB and no display. CPU sometimes is warm, sometimes it doesn't get warm.

Sometimes it will spin fans for a second and then stop, and the postcode screens backlight will flash rapidly. Sometimes the clear cmos btn led will flash, but not always.

I have tried a CMOS clear, a different CPU (p4 630), reseating ram, 1 stick of ram, different GPU, different PSU, and nothing changes. The issue is certainly a board issue. I tried a buzzer and it does not beep.

Can anyone help me identify and potentially repair the issue?

I should mention, the board arrived very dusty and the bare copper heatsinks on the board are starting to look like the statue of liberty, so it's likely the board was not stored in ideal conditions previously.

I soaked the board in alcohol and scrubbed it. This got rid of all the dust and dirt. I also replaced the thermal paste on the NB and SB.

The Striker Extreme, that brings back memories; bad ones.

First 'gaming' motherboard ever I bought, back in 2007.

The reason I swore off all Asus products forever. Well, that and the wretched service from Asus, I mean absolutely abysmal service. Board was DOA, similar to what you describe, as I recall. Took two months to get a replacement. I still have the board in the attic, to remind me what crap it is.

My advice, trashcan.

I did learn something. The rear lcd, while it isn't displaying any numbers, IS displaying postcodes. Its flashing the backlight in the pattern of the codes.

It flashes 3 times if I unplug CPU power connector, and 5 times if I remove pcie power from GPU, for example.

It is flashing short 4 times regardless of if I have ram in it or not. This code seems to be either system timer failure or something to do with ram. I wonder if it won't play nicely with the ram I have, which came from an AMD system.

I just had an AM4 system do the same for me and it was the RAM in my situation, one of the sticks is dead.

Try swapping the Ram with another type or speed to check.

Just dug around and found the ram out of my 775 dell back in the day. 2x1 Samsung kit.

Installed it and... No difference.

4 short flashes.

What exactly does system timer failure mean?

Unfortunately my multimeter lacks a hz function, and I don't have a tester or o scope (although I really should get one)

No beep

The board actually flashes the screen once (which I thought meant post successful?) At boot, but it flashes the codes when I press and hold power button to turn it off.

I had a P4 board from them like that and it wasn't until my TUF 990FX R2.0 I said I would use them like AsRock.

If I can't fix this it's going on my shelf next to my other dead rog board (or at least a few dead ram slots) Uh, yea reliability 10/10.
