ASUS RT-AX86S

Ok, so, my Netgear died. I am now running a CAT5 from my wall to this computer.

I wanted a trusted router and went through hundreds of reviews across the web. Came up with the RT AX86S as the winner of reliability and capabilities.

Now though, I have been hearing about some updates bricking ASUS routers...Do start over and look for something different? (It's still in the box, planned on installing it later this week).

Are you referring to this? I can't find anything recent that is meaningfully widespread about updates bricking Asus routers.

No issues of the sort or during any firmware update, but I run Merlin firmware and power my AC86U with my UPS during updates.

What do you mean you are running CAT-5 from the wall to your computer? That suggests there already is a some sort of routing device on your network.

I recently got the RX-AX86U Pro for the same reason, as my seven year old R7800 decided to finally die.

In my case, this was the more direct replacement for my old R7800 and has the same retail price as the non Pro and is only about $33 more than the S here in Taiwan.

The "bricking" wasn't a bricking as such from what I understand, it was a server side issue at Asus that caused some routers to lock up, but Asus seems to have fixed the issue on their side and it didn't affect me at all.

All of the AX86 models are supported by Merlin as well.

The Netgear RAX-10 and R6700AX may not be the best (no USB port), but are well priced ($57 renewed on Amazon); I think they may actually have the same hardware and firmware.

They run cool and have a big heatsink, which may bode well for longevity.

I am basically done with NetGear. I have had to replace, now, 3 of them in the last 6 years. This time I researched forums, top 10 lists, and so on, for hours and hours. The RT AX86S led the way, I have no use for the pro, since I am such a newb at networking. Now I need to replace my Netgear 1Gig switch, also dead, I think...anyways, it's an 8 port and I need more. I have 12 computers, now, and I would like 11 of them to be wired. Currently, 8 are wired, 3 are WiFi , with Chinese 2.4 usb dongle's, that are not so great.

I would also like it if I could get something reasonably priced and faster than a single Gig. That, is another chunk of time to research, though, and I have to get ready for work.

You either have very bad luck with Netgear (because, typically, they are quite reliable) or something else is taking them out - like bad power.

Every home and every computer user should have access to a AC Outlet Tester to ensure the wall outlet is properly wired and grounded to Earth ground. I recommend one with a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupt) indicator as it can be used to test bathroom and kitchen outlets (outlets near water) too. These testers can be found for your type and voltage outlet, foreign or domestic, (like this one for the UK, or this one for German outlets) at most home improvement stores, or even the electrical department at Wal-Mart. Use it to test all the outlets in the home and if a fault is shown, have it fixed by a qualified electrician.

If your outlets test fine, consider putting your network gear (along with your computers) on a "good" UPS with AVR. Understand backup power during a power outage is only a minor, secondary reason for putting your sensitive/critical electronics on a "good" UPS with AVR. It is the AVR (automatic voltage regulation) that makes them so important and valuable.
