That is AMD's HEDT platform similar to Intel's HEDT. From the rumours leaked so far only cpu available for that platform are going to be 12,14 &16 core chips.

I guess Linus doesnt understand that threadripper is two separate dies on one chip so it makes sense to have each die's power and i/o separated on the socket.
