ASUS Xonar drivers are worse than Creative hands down...

I hope someone at ASUS will move their fat butt and do something, otherwise i might just as well throw their crap card out of my room. Through the window. Closed one.

It was all fine when i bought it. Few games crashed with GX mode enabled but i could live with that. Life was good and i had very good sound. Few days ago i bought new graphic card, a spankin' new HD5850. Installed it and wow, what a speed. Until i got a BSOD. And another one after the last one when PC was trying to boot. What the hell!? I thought it's the heat issue, retested everything, everything perfectly normal. Left open case and while playing UT3, bam, BSOD again. What the f**k!? And another one during World Racing. And another during Defense Grid. What the!? Then i thought it's something wrong with the graphic card. But then i thought, if it was a gfx card, i'd have GPU recovery error's as usual. And then after it BSOD-ed in Foobar2k, soundcard popped into my mind. Removed Essence STX and used on-board ADI AD2000 chip.
No more BSOD's at all. Played UT3 for ages, played World Racing, all well. Installed Xonar Essence STX and got all sorts of BSOD's again. For ntfs.sys, for netio.sys even for ecache.sys.
It was just killing my system randomly. Tried PCIe 16x and PCIe 4x slots. Same crap.

It appears their (ASUS) product doesn't work properly on their own motherboard (Rampage II Gene). I'm using the latest Gene BIOS 1202 or whatever it is with GX mode enabled.
And all this started when i installed MSI HD5850 OC Edition into the box. This has to be the worst system crashing i've ever encountered. And it has been bothering me for 3 days before i figured it out today. F**k me.

Some say Creative has loads of problems and awful drivers. The fact is, i never had a single issue with any Creative Labs soundcard. But with this ASUS one, apart from great sound (when it works) it's just terrible. If ASUS doesn't fix this damn GX mode once and for all, i'll be yet again forced to go back to Creative. I'd rather place ALchemy files on my own in games folder than such generic crap like GX killing all my games (and system) just because it's half baked.

I love ASUS products, but this is just plain ridiculous. When will they get it that superior hardware is worth exactly nothing if it's software side is rubbish. It works on Win7 x64, but is a complete disaster on Vista x64. Just because someone is too lazy to do the drivers right...

This is interesting, because I have heard everyone raving about how good Xonar is and how bad Creative's offering is when compared to each other. But I think yours is an odd one out. Have you tried to contact the ASUS support?

Essence STX used to work perfectly on Win7 x64 when i was testing it. But now on Vista, it's all problems again. Why is it such a big problem to make good drivers for Vista!?

I also don't understand why have Vista drivers RC attached to the filename but Win7 doesn't.
RC usually stands for Release Candidate...

Are there any other drivers for Vista? Even newer beta ones i could give them a try?

7 is a far better OS than Vista anyway, what are you thinking going back to Vista?

When I built my system last summer, I had tons of problems with Xonar.

After a few months, I sold it and stuck with onboard audio. Much better, bug free, and sounds perfect to me. Z-5300's hit just as hard, and no problems with driver issues, microphone static, system instability, etc.

Wrong, it's more of a gimmick using onboard audio chips not all that different from other onboard chips, the benefit is the x-fi software and it's EQ which I praise because it works very well. Some users have found a way to use X-Fi software on other onboard chips, which I think is awesome if it helps with their audio enjoyment. You won't beat or truly match a dedicated soundcard with onboard, at least yet.

And to the OP, Auzentech is just about as bad for my X-Fi Forte, except the drivers work amazingly well and iirc they're still "beta". The last release was July iirc, but as long as my audio is good and stable, I'm happy. Though I never really had any issues with creative drivers, though I usually stuck to and recommended lower-end X-Fi's or older Audigy cards.

Depends on what you do most with your rig, how much your budget is, and what you're looking for in a sound card...there are a ton of choices. Asus, Auzen and Creative all make good products, all have their good and bad...so far my favorite brand is Auzen at this point. But many love the Asus brand cards. I wanted a better sound card than my already good X-Fi Xtreme Music (find one used for $50 shipped or so if ya can, still a damn solid sound card)...yet still have the software functionality and EQ the Creative card had, and a dedicated onboard headphone amp...Auzen had it, I got it. Paid under $100 for it, but it runs around $140 if you can find it...and it's replacement iirc is similar in price with some more goodies tacked on too. For most a lower end X-Fi (Audio or Music card), some like the Turtle Beach cards, there are quite a few...I recommend you start a thread if you truly have interest, that and search there was a thread started a week or two ago about someone wanting a sound card after using onboard iirc...sorry for the off-topic OP!

Cmedia sucks too for driver support - Why is it so hard for these dumps to make a good card and give it good drivers without all the extra crappy apps to add sound FX (really, do I need an option to add massive amounts of echoing to all the sounds on my PC?) and hog up RAM and cause BSOD?

Heh, it seems like soundcard drivers suck all around... I would be using onboard too, but it only has one line-out... I need 3 for my speakers.

Most people using cheaper gear don't really benefit much from going dedicated anyway. I have no problem at all with my Essence ST in Windows 7 x64.

So it only happens on Vista and not 7? Then the solution is simple, heh.

7 is a far better OS than Vista anyway, what are you thinking going back to Vista?

Win7 was a haxored test version, i own a genuine licensed Vista. That's why i went back...
Besides, it works just as good as Win7. I even have DirectX 11 in games and i don't miss any of the Win7 functionality. It's just the dreadful Xonar audio driver that doesn't work at all with GX mode. And this wouldn't be such an issue if i wasn't playing older games. But i am and for those i NEED GX mode for sound to be at least half good and so i can use EAX.

With X-Fi Xtreme Music i never had a single issue. There was some sound skipping once in NFS:MW for 5 seconds and then it was gone. And lower framerate with EAX in FEAR. But it was fixed with next driver update. If you look at it, this was a minor issue. ALchemy required more work, because you had to copy it on your own, but it worked perfectly each and every time.

Are there any Xonar Essence STX BETA drivers that are marked with 2010 year date?

From the looks of it, it seems to be conflicting with ATI HDMI Audio thingie. I've removed it in Device Manager and also disabled it under Playback devices. I've also disabled High Definition Audio thing in Device Manager but i don't think it's relevant here. So far no BSOD's, even after long UT3 torturing with 32 bots and excessive gibbing mod that produces loads of gibs and also loads of sounds on each gibbing (so much in fact that sound starts to skip and get cut in the middle of playback). I've had a game crash (Aliens vs predator Classic 2000), but it was just the game that crashed, not entire system with BSOD. I'll test some more but from the looks of it i've found the root of all problems. World Racing to test but it looks good so far.

If you get a creative card or an auzen based on a creative card I really recommend getting the community modded drivers.

I never liked those community drivers because they were all rubbish. I've tried them on SB Live!, Audigy 2 and X-Fi Xtreme Music. They were the same crap as factory ones. Just packed in something else. Just the same as modded drivers for graphic cards.

Besides, it appears i've solved the issue. No more BSOD's after i've uninstalled and disabled ATI HDMI Audio. So i'm staying with Essence STX for now.

Don't know what drivers you used but the community ones were much better for me. I mean 50% of the time switching modes crashed the the control panel, and sound quality kept going down in successive releases. The modded drivers fixed all that.

+1 for Realtek onboard. No stupid crashes here. :D

Did you notice that Realtek keeps updating their drivers like every 2 weeks or something. Latest version is 2.47. TPU only shows 2.43 still!
