I’m having an issue with a new system I just put together and I just can’t seem to figure out why. So I have a Athlon X4 760K and it’s running 60-70*C at idle and if loaded causes the system to reboot. I first ran system with the stock cooler and thought that was the problem so I changed out the cooler to a tower cooler with new paste and the system still runs hot. Ambient temp is only 18*C

Something else odd is in the BIOs setup the CPU only shows 36-41*C but under Windows 10 is when it skyrockets up. Even with no programs running.

What could this be ?

Also want to add the case is a SilverStone GD09B with 2x 140mm Intake and 1x 140mm Exhaust with the side panel off. GPU under load is only aroun 50-60*C so I know it can’t be the Case ventilation

Everything is set to Auto

And a wonky Temp sensor wouldn’t explain the shutdowns that resemble thermal shutdown

Yes it would. If the sensor is telling the OS "oh god we gonna be lit soon" then yeah, it would thermal shutdown.

Again, if the sensor is wonky, that would not damage the chip unless it's flipped from your situation. Your sensor could be saying it's 60c when it's actually 25c. Damage would be saying it's 25c when it's actually 60c.

Don't trust Auto to be right every time.
This mobo only has

Auto
Normal
+ whatever you want to add on top of volts

No I meant if the sensor isn’t working properly that the CPU could be damaged

Again, and again, if the sensor isn't working right it can show a higher than actual reading, or a lower than actual reading. Read what I said in the last post I put in.

Well let me say this

Is it possible to fix as it keeps causing hard restarts

Unless you know a way to correct the sensor, or know someone who can, no. Unless it's NOT the sensor going weird and possibly a mounting issue or something else.

Try manually entering stock voltage and set it to adaptive or something similar if there is such option. CPU needs to be at stock speeds.
Next thing is to get a better cooler like Arctic Freezer 13 Pro: https://www.arctic.ac/eu_en/freezer-13-pro-93.html

Read above
If it has Auto & Normal, maybe a bios update could solve the problem and add some extra options.

Check once again if everything is mounted properly and check the base of the cooler for dents, scratches or factory flaws.

Some gigabyte boards overvolt on auto.

Look up the default volts and dial them in. If its stable start to undervolt as much as possible.

I had to do this with an am2 gigabyte board. It overvolted absurdly high.

If it has Auto & Normal, maybe a bios update could solve the problem and add some extra options.

Check once again if everything is mounted properly and check the base of the cooler for dents, scratches or factory flaws.

I’ll check for a BIOs update

Some gigabyte boards overvolt on auto.

Look up the default volts and dial them in. If its stable start to undervolt as much as possible.

I had to do this with an am2 gigabyte board. It overvolted absurdly high.
There’s no way to manually set the voltage

This board has some really weird voltage settings

His X4 760 is Richland, the bios update only mentions microcode update for Godvari. It may or may not help.

What are you using to check the CPU temperature?
