i use atitool for stability test, and then furmark and then 3dmark06 HDR test #2 and then play some games, i use DiRT, looks like heavy enough for stability enough...

Ok the strange "hard crash" I got was actually Vista doing the "Display driver stopped working and was restarted" thing.. the screen went black for about 10 seconds with looping sound and I was like :banghead: but then it recovered

That's the built in ATI VPU Recover software kicking in due to unstable overclock. I have seen it many times. There has been a couple of times where I thought I had a stable overclock, played 4 hours of games and all of a sudden it does exactly what you discribed.

Hmmm, I'm still debating if I should try to do voltage mod and aftermarket cooling. This may be either out of my league, or out of my card's league.

I'm playing around with my stock card and so far all I've done is bios mod with fan adjustments. I have a Visiontech HD4850, and I'm having problems running thru 3dmark06 with just 675/1000.

I just don't understand why it's not reliable. I know for sure that I had run 700/1000 all the way thru 3dmark06 and received a score. I tried 700/1000 again today and it crashed. I tried 675/1000 next and it crashed.

Here's what I've done:
Downloaded MSI bios, added fan adjustments via RBI, and flashed it on to the card. I think it was ati winflash that I used. The voltage in the bios is set to 1.18 and 625/933 3d.

After flashing the above on the card, I used AMD GPU tool to change the clocks to 700/1000. I confirm that it's set via GPU-Z.

Does the voltage (mine set to 1.18) have anything to do with stability? Or is that just the clock speeds (700/1000)? Maybe I don't understand the voltage portion of the bios. Maybe I need to post my edited bios for you guys to look at.....I wonder if I edited it wrong.

When I used AMD GPU tool and set the clocks higher than the bios, is it supposed to reset when I reboot the computer? I would think the answer is yes, because the card is going with what the card knows (bios setting of 625/933). I just wanted to make sure that there's not something wrong with the card and that's why it's resetting every reboot to 625/933.

My only other thought is that the card is crashing because it just has the stock cooler, but I don't recall seeing temp higher than 50C and I read all day that ppl are achieving clocks much higher than 700/1000 with stock cooler and 1.2 volts. I'm confused.

Do the Visiontechs suck that bad?

I'll look over my bios again and do some more testing, and post the results. This is annoying

Interesting.. I guess I will lower the clocks a bit and do some more "testing" (gaming)

Don't feel all too bad. I can't get past 650 with my Sapphire +Accelero S1 +120mm fan. Tried several different bioses but to no use. Even had a 2d crash with the MSI bios, driver stopped responding. So I'm back to standard Sapphire bios.

The memory goes to atleast 1080 with Zalman heatsinks, but get very hot unless there is enough airflow on them.

What are your temperatures like? I can attest to the fact that the Zalman ramsinks get very hot at 1100 Mhz

About 60C with a fanspeed of 500rpm, upped it to a bit less than 800rpm and it went down another 5-6 degress. But the increase of fan speed was not because of core temp (which was fine), I wanted to lower the mem temps as well as VRM.

I may try two fans at 500rpm.

I have two 120mm Antec Tricools attached to my S1. They are set to "Low" or 1200 RPM. Does your S1 have some 'wiggle' room; I don't think mine is seated properly but I've remounted it with the same results

Do you guys have any pics of your cards with coolers and sinks installed? I'm curious how your setups look. Thanks.

Quick update. I rechecked the MSI bios and reflashed it on the card. I 3dmark06,05, and 03 all with no problems at 700/1000. So odd..

Temps are around 56C stock cooler. Should I install my Coolink GFXChilla before I do much more testing? or am I ok until I get to about 750/1000 or something with the stock cooler? What are your thoughts

Does GPU-Z show the memory temp for the 4850? If so, which temp is it?

hey troubled ppl can u post a picture of ur temps? at load to do that simply run GPU-Z ('sensors' section) and click on that little black photo camera in gpu z it'll snap a pic of ur gpu z sensors chooze "upload to free image hosting" then copy first URL and paste it here now run something like ati tool or FurMark in windowed mod...so u could see ur temps rise to their highest,,, and take a pic of that

I don't have direct contact with the fan and the cooler, since I'm a quiet nut and I try to deal with any vibrations. Instead I have a bit of rubber piece between.

I should get a digital camare really, but that might take a couple of weeks. Pictures say more than words really.

The current ati tool, just as Rivatuner are not fully compatible with these new cards. You can still check for artifacts though and provide a load for the GPU.

Previously with the same card: Seasonic S12 500w and now Zalman 850w. Zero difference as both are enough.

5 minute load temps (seems stable) with Atitool (massive amount of coil whining from the card)

Man, my GeCube 3870 overclocked well and didn't squel like a pig :) :D

Btw, artifacts with atitool even at 1020. So I'll only OC it to 1000 and keep the core at 640. It really isen't worth all the time and effort to get it higher. I simply got a lousy card for OC.

Yes. The hated coil whining (not everyone is aware of this since their computers make to much noise so it is drown out) The card stays faily quiet when gaming but when loading older applications or Atitool 3dmode/artifact scan the result is coil whining.

I got a DMM but I do not plan on using it. If I can't get past 450 even with the 1.2v biosmod the efforts are a waste of time. I'll replace the card when the next series come out, will try a different brand.

OC is done with CCC. No difference with AMD GPU clock tool.

I don't think the card is damaged. I haven't broken anything since the days of Geforce 2mx.

I tried several different bios mods that other people have made, as well as a few of my own. No difference. Most cards go higher than 650mhz without bios mods so bah, I'll simply stick it to 640/1000 and replace it someday. Perhaps sooner rather than later... :)
