ATI 8.8 Beta Drivers

Well.. a little dissapointing I suppose, though I was hitting FPS I haven't seen before.
With a HD4870 + HD4850

8.7's

8.8 Beta

*For the first time with any Ati driver I've seen the sm3.0 score dropped. Huh?

Looks like they're focusing on the 4K series... I'll download them, but I doubt they'll work.

I'll keep you posted considering I'm still AGP and some people may find that useful.

UPDATE: Nope, didn't work.

I forgot to mention this, but to take my card to 700/1160 with the 8.8 drivers, I had to use the GPU tool rather than CCC, with auto tune would get to about 690/1033, but if I tried moving any of the sliders and testing in CCC, it would just hang, CCC would respond, but the buttons would go grey as if it were testing but nothing would happen. Hitting default would reset to the 625/993. And at those clock speeds, I would have some artifacting.

Well, I can no longer revert back to 8.7's, nothing works. I'm stuck using 8.8 beta's now, I hope everything works ok..

Single HD4870, Stock BIOS, WinXP

Testing for any differences in power consumption:

Catalyst 8.7 Final - 135W 2D IDLE (500/900)
Catalyst 8.8 Beta - 135W 2D IDLE (500/900)

Performance is about the same between the two in my favorite game (ETQW) and within the margin of error.

Meh, nothing new here.

Back to using AMD Gpu Clock Tool for my 2D IDLE power consumption fix...

PS: I'd say someone just did a little fudging with numerous version numbers and the .inf from the Catalyst 8.7 Beta drivers and posted it as Catalyst 8.8 Beta. Both are remarkably similar and only differ in size by 10KB. Very fishy...

8.8 ? I hope they did something with the fan control because running the fan profiles is limiting the oc to just 790/1100 and I know that there is plenty room left , so lets go ATI what are you waiting for you know the fan control problem do something about it ! :banghead:

ASUS 4870 TOP bios solves this, flashed mine and it never goes over 70C Load, its idling at 49C, no need for fan profiles. Its also unlocked up to 900 Core in CCC.

IDK dude, ive been running Final Release Drivers for along time, Last Time i had problems was with the Cat 7.8s when they messed up with DX compatibility for AGP, all was fixed with the Hotfixdrivers, Hotfix to me are AGP Drivers now.

currently on 8.7s, work fine.

8.7 Betas are much more stable on my system than 8.7, 8.6, 8.5, 8.4 and 8.3 are, all final releases.

I guess it depends on systems.
My systems have never had a severe issue with ATi drivers.

Strangely I just read an article saying that 8.8's were supposed to address the powersaving issues and therefore hopefully reduce temps......it hasent......unless the final release is better of course.

This article (german) points out there are some power consumtion improvements, but the performance is screwed somehow. I strongly believe they ran the test wrong or something.

According to AMD (on thier forums anyway) these aren't the real deal. Most likely these are 8.7 beta's that were renamed. They are affecting my machine the same way the 8.7 betas did too. Now I'm stuck with them barring a Windows reinstall.

I was able to get 8.7's back. When you run the driver installer, it gives you a choice between Install and Uninstall. I just selected uninstall and uninstalled all of the components. Reboot, run the 8.7 installer. Install 8.7, reboot and you're back to where you were

Worked like a charm for me.

still haven't got it fix man? I had the same as him and it fix the problem (Wifes PC). Then on mine, I had to uninstall #1 CCC #2 Uninstall each card in Device Manager #3 Restart #4 Clean all drivers #5 Restart #6 Make sure that all drivers and app of any kind are gone. Then Finally install 8.7

Then Boom got it going.

Yes, I have done that. I even uninstalled then reinstalled Microsoft Visual C++, manually went through the registry, system files, windows folder, temp ,prefetch, etc..

Any luck yet man?

Did you try to uninstall everything and run a driver cleaner in safe mode?
I'm sure you did but one more thing you could do is a system restore before the instalation. It always fixes crap like this for me. Just be sure to do what you can to remove the bad drivers before you do that.

Also did you try and simply roll the drivers back?

Thought I would post this in here, did a bit of googling on the official release of the 8.8 Drivers, according to a post I found on HardForum, that person thinks (or knows) that the official release date is the 12th. Personally I am going to guess that they will peek within the next week.

Oye, when are they going to get xfire back in biznazz. It must be all FUBAR if they haven't tackled that beast yet. Power consumption should take a backseat to xfire, they are losing the race to SLI right now.
