simple question, i ordered the ati 4850 top (asus) to replace my nvidia 9600gt....will i see a big jump in performance over the nvidia card?

the 9600gt is a great card but its starting to struggle with the latest games, having to turn down a few settings on games like fallout 3 etc to stay at a constant 60fps, while playing at 1680 x 1050

ive read a few reviews of the card, saying it beats out the 9600 by a long shot, but realistically, will there be that big of an improvement?

Yes, the HD 4850 TOP will give you performance on-par/better than that of the 9800 GTX+.

Make sure you clean out your old NV drivers or you wont get the full performance of the card

Not as a pre-setting, but you can define them.

Be sure to lock that fan speed at 100%. My asus top 4850(same price) was quiet but ran hot even with 100% fan.

Overall its a decent card, I put an Accelero S1 rev2 on mine and added VRM heatsinks and to the mem. Asus really should have put a VRM heatsink on this card IMHO. I can now run mine passive at the same temps as the stock heatsink with 100%fan, which = ~70c load and 52C idle.

Also you can use ATT(Ati TRay Tool) to set the idle speeds lower to save 15w at idle and almost 10c lower temps.

Which one did you have? I mean what was your stock 4850 cooler?

or

As far as I understood, the 1st picture is like a v2 of the card, witha better cooler than the one in second.

Its not that they run hot... its that the fans fail ALOT. IDK what causes it, maybe crappy motors... but they will just out of the blue fail. Keep an eye on that fan.

Wonder why ASUS was the only company who used Rev A4 on the stock HSF's. Mine is A4 and keeps my HD4850 @ 50% fanspeed @ 32-34C Idle and 56-61C full load.

Hm, my VT idles at 40% fan speed at a nice cool 61c, gaming it goes to 60% and stays under 75c @ 745/1050.

Stock settings it would run around 105-109c but perfectly fine.

Try not to top 95C. As the temps go up, power consumption goes up also.
The Cooler the card, the higher the clocks as it needs less power..

100C isn't good at all. On load it should be 80 max for a comfortable ride.

i got it!

only benchmarks ive ran in comparison to the 9600gt is the last remnant benchmark @ a res of 1680 x 1050

9600gt got 54 fps - radeon 4850 got 68 fps

temp got up to 75c on that test, idle it runs at 50c

performance test 3d benchmarks crashed with the 4850

will post back with more results

im already running into alot of problems with this card. for example, gpuz wont work, it freezes the system when i try to run it. my screen goes black every so often, sometimes it will coem back on, sometimes it just locks up. and fallout 3 wont run for more than 5 minutes at a time without crashing

edit: fear 2 wont even load. as soon as i click the icon, and it switches to 3d mode, the computer locks up. call of duty 5 does the same thing fallout 3 does. 5 minutes and computer locks up
