ATI Brand No More???

I looked around and I did not see this posted. I even searched for it granted my searching skills here are not very skilled so I apologize if it is a double post.

But Anyway I was looking around the net today.... and it appears there is a rumor out there stating that ATI Brand name will be no more. It seems that AMD will be used instead.

So the new Generation would be the AMD Radeon HD6000 series.... Not ATI.

Which I think would be a horrible Idea!

LOL Agreed....

But I think it would be a bad Idea mainly because it's My opinion that ATI's name is one of the things keeping AMD in the Game.... not the other way around.

Plus ATI has a long tradition that relates to their name. This is just a horrible marketing move all around!!!

Two other thoughts....

1. Isn't AMD's color's Green anyway.... LOL it wouldn't be as cool Green team vs green team LOL (Not that it matters nor do I think they would really change the red.)

2. AMD has had their day in the sun. With great CPU's. I am sure they will again. And right now they still make very affordable good CPU's. But let's Face it right now Intel has the
upper hand and AMD is struggling a little bit. Why take a portion of a Company (ATI) That is not struggling and put it under the same name of a company that is struggling right now.
I don't care where you come from .... that doesn't make any sense! You would think they want to keep their names as far away as possible right now... until something crazy comes out from AMD.

If it's true, good move. Other than those who eat, sleep PC tech all day, there are countless folks that have no idea that AMD is even associated with ATi. The AMD Vision thing was the first step as it holds on to the red color scheme so don't expect the only two graphics cards players to be green. Hopefully this will bode well for AMD stock.. something needs to. Only the misguided will come away from this feeling bad or whatever.

Wrong. AMD is printed on the PCB, right above the PCI-E.

Sounds like you got lucky, all I can see is "Made in China" and a little sticker with an evil smile that says, "this thing meets RoHS standards like cannibalism is wholesome".

Honestly I couldn't care less whether AMD rids itself of the ATI brand name but it would seem, at least superficially, to be marketing suicide. ATI is an established and recognized brand name and components sell just because of that.

I read something about this a little while ago and it's apparently due to their Fusion brand.

Because this has the CPU & GPU "fused" on the same die, apparently having Fusion under the AMD brand and discreet graphics under the ATI brand would lead to too much brand confusion in the marketplace.

Personally, I think losing the ATI brand is a shame. It's well known and many companies have particular brands for various product line and do very well with it.

One fine example is Matsushita, who own the Panasonic & Technics brands, which have been going for over 20 years and are doing very well.

But you know not to seem like I am flip flopping positions here but you bring up some good points.

On a national stage I agree that AMD is a better known name then ATI. Except in the PC community.

But with that said.... AMD is not really that well known either.

You figure Graphics card companies are usually marketing too PC enthusiasts. If not to them they are marketing to places that they want their chips in (Example Xbox/PS/Laptop Companies/Motherboard Companies Exc...)
ATI is a great branded name that has a good if not wonderful reputation in that area. So if those are the people that they are marketing too.... why the change? It could make people wonder (Companies) What else has changed besides the Name?
You see I think the only good thing is ... that it might and I do mean might broaden their horizon.

Otherwise what's the benefit?

Actually at best I think it will be even ended with a little bit on the downside. I vote they should keep their name.

If it makes their cards cheaper, cooler, faster and more overclockable I don't care.

They could go back to an ugly green 80's style coloured PCB to go with the whole AMD colour and I wouldn't care.

If they start busting out AMD logos with something like "The Way it's meant to be played" on nearly every game and pressing any key does not skip it I will be pissed!

AMD were known for making sub-par CPUs (in Intel's wake), why bring that negative reputation in on ATI's success?

AMD has owned ATI for a long time and most people should know this. If they want to get rid of it, I really don't mind. I don't like calling ATI GPUs ATI anyway because they are AMD. XD


AMD slipped up but I wouldn't say they have a bad reputation. There was only a handful of periods where AMD was competitive with Intel. Second place, unfortunately, is like a tradition for them.

i get the idea that some people see the ATi logo as a traditional brand name and think that the change might loose some of that influence it used to have

us in the know wont really care because its still ATi or well still AMD but not branded as ATi

i dont care as long as the make good competitive cards

EDIT: Intel where going far long before AMD ever started making its own chips, they even used to make chips for Intel. Intels market share comes from mostly OEM and the remainder the enthusiast or home market. AMD is lucky because not to long ago it wasn't doing so well but now ATi is integrated properly into the company its back up again a bit.

yup, my 5870 has AMD on it

as to some of the comments, god fanboys are everywhere.

AMD CPU's may not 100% match intels CPU's performance, but they get 90% of the way there for 70% of the price (or less, in some cases)

who gives a damn if it says AMD or ATI? Radeon is the name people recognise.

i really don't care about the name once its in my pc i don't plan on seeing it again for a long time. as long as ATI/AMD keep it up, then i don't care, they can call it "I like Pink unicorn's" i would still buy it, it's all about performance for me.
