AMD only really exists today because IBM demanded it back in the 1980s. ATI is a small portion of AMD in pretty much every regard. AMD almost died back in 2006 in large part because of the ATI buyout (horrible timing) and also because AMD staked everything on Phenom being good when the outcome was the exact opposite (Phenom sucked). AMD is doing well right now because of splitting off the fabrication assets into a separate entity: Global Foundries. They've also had several changes of leadership throughout its ranks and have a good product (Phenom II).

I think the primary motiviation for this change is because AMD's intention with the ATI buyout from day one was to blur the lines between GPU and CPU. AMD will soon start to place ATI GPUs inside of AMD CPUs--it just gets too wordy, complicated, and confusing. Think of it from a marketing standpoint: they would have to advertise AMD integrated GPUs and ATI discreet GPUs. It's all mindless ramblings only those guilty of fanism would understand.

ATI had to die sooner or later and now is as good as any. Maybe ATI's success will rub off on AMD?

I just don't see the point really. I don't see any gain from this. If anything I see more of a loss.

Sigh.... a part of me though regardless of what happens would just miss the name ATI.

The upside to all of this though... is that it could possibly lower prices. Maybe more of a merger and combining the two Research departments could cause a decent price drop.

I know when an old company I used to work for was bought out and combine.... their prices dropped afterward from a direct link to not having as much overhead.

Possibly the same thing here. Or possibly not... just speculation.

AMD bought ATI back in '06, but a lot of people like me still call AMD's video cards by the name of ATI. It's just a habit that is almost impossible for me to break.

They can call there video cards what ever the hell they like, but i will always refer to there cards as ''ATI Radeon HD ****''.

Depends where you shop i guess, the 1090T is actually more expensive (or the same) then an i7 930 at places like Newegg, Amazon etc. and you get less performance overall with a 1090t. But of course this depends what you do/need. You being a heavy AMD/ATI fan should at least know the current prices. lol(not being mean)

I'm not so sure on that - when i talk to my less tech savvy friends they all say they have "ATi <model number>" graphics cards - if i asked them if they had a radeon in their pc they probably wouldn't know.

I will miss the ATi branding, but as long as the cards are still kick-ass then i don't mind that much. I will continue to call them ATi cards though, AMD branded GPUs just doesn't feel right.
