Well, Aug 5 was my B'Day and seems no one in the real world, except my wife and dog, even cared. Only hear from people when they want.:ohwell:

But, that ain't why you are reading this.

ATI released on my B'Day; ATI Catalyst™ 10.7 Update Driver for OpenCL™ 1.1 Support, which are supposedly, catalyst 10.7b opencl1.1 drivers.

Quote from GPU-76 web page:
"ATI Catalyst 10.7 Update Driver Feature:
The release of this software driver from AMD delivers support, when used in conjunction with the ATI Stream SDK v2.2, for OpenCL 1.1, an open and royalty-free programming standard for general-purpose computations on heterogeneous systems."

However, it seems the web site programmer\tech has, either mis-typed 2.2 or, someone has jumped the gun. No, 2.2 out, at least officially, yet...

ATI Stream SDK roadmap

2.2 is here: ATI Stream Software Development Kit (SDK) v2.2

This is just some info for your perusal and use, have fun. Post comments, results and any other info or links you come upon.

Have a great day.:)

Anyone found any OpenCL uses so far? I mean, I love the way GPU computing is going and I think OpenCL has the potential to be great, but so far, I haven't seen any RL uses.

The wife remembered, and that is what is important. Don't let the real world get you down, the Cyberworld will eventually take over (once Skynet comes online.)

rendering programs still use it, not much with games.

IMO, ATI needs to get off their ass and make some openCL software - anything at all, and either give it out or sell it. they have half a video encoding program in the ATI drivers now, just make an outright one and give it free to ATI users, and suddenly people will care about openCL/stream/etc.

Thanks for the link. I will have to read through these, as there are some nice development aids and interesting tools.

Yeah, they have been slow, but they are still working on it.
Slowly. Sorta, like on life support.

But that's why they stole that PhysX guy from Nvidia! Hopefully something will come of it soon.

So basically if games start using OpenCL we can start to see hardware accelerated Physics on ATI Hardware? And this is in existence but not being incorporated into any games as of yet?

Yes, there are a few and Cyberlink is one.
GPGPU application list

Render / RayTracing:

Fractron 9000: GPU Fractal Flame Renderer (OpenCL)
SmallptGPU (OpenCL)

Those are the only 2 I see. Is "STREAM" GPU-accelerated for both Nvidia and ATI? I don't understand.

Dude Fractron is soo awesome look what I just made. :) Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Also using the OpenCL benchmark it says there is no OPENcl on my computer. How do I get it?

Those are the only 2 I see. Is "STREAM" GPU-accelerated for both Nvidia and ATI? I don't understand.

ATi Stream is a development enviroment that supports OpenCL. OpenCL is developed by Khronus and ATi Stream allows the use of it.
This is quoted from the Stream Development Kit web page and explains it.

"What is ATI Stream Technology?

ATI Stream technology is a set of advanced hardware and software technologies that enable AMD graphics processing cores (GPU), working in concert with the system’s x86 cores (CPU), to accelerate many applications beyond just graphics. This enables better balanced platforms capable of running demanding computing tasks faster than ever, and sets software developers on the path to optimize for the upcoming AMD Fusion™ Family of Accelerated Processing Units (APUs).

What is the ATI Stream Software Development Kit?

The ATI Stream Software Development Kit (SDK) is a complete development platform created by AMD to allow you to quickly and easily develop applications accelerated by ATI Stream technology. The SDK allows you to develop your applications in a high-level language, OpenCL™ (Open Computing Language).

What is OpenCL™?

OpenCL™ is the first truly open and royalty-free programming standard for general-purpose computations on heterogeneous systems. OpenCL™ allows programmers to preserve their expensive source code investment and easily target both multi-core CPUs and the latest GPUs, such as those from AMD."

btw what is compute shader ?

A way to use your GPU not only as a graphics processor, but as a more generalized processor.

Also, this release is great news!!

Oh and happy belated B-day Viper. I've always thought of a birthday as an arbitrary date. Every day is a good day to have a party.

Got the SDK btw and it I could benchmark OpenCL. Its such a shame it isn't being used in games yet, come on developers!
