Hey TPUers, Do you think the ATi HD 5970 is still viable in 2018. I was offered one at a really great price but you really can't find benchmarks on them any longer. So i wanted to know if they are still viable in today's time for Light-Medium Triple Monitor gaming

I mostly play like CoD and BF

It's old. Vram limitations and age will show quite a bit. Which BF are you playing?

They're limited to legacy drivers now too, not great for support.

I don't know if you have a GPU now, but it'll be around the same performance as a GTX660 in terms of pushing fps minus the vram limit. I did okay in BF3 with my 660, didn't get to test it in BF4.

I think it would be a stretch in BF1... but triple monitor, I don't think so. You're pushing a huge resolution at that point, which would likely cripple the card. At 1080p, it may still do okay.

From everything I could gather on it it hovers around the HD 7970 GHz and GTX 680 in raw performance but when the VRAM gets pass 1GB it gets crippled

Originally I thought the GPU was 2GB because it was marketed as 2GB until I looked deeper into it thanks to you guys, so now I know it’s actually only 1GB

Yeah they never figured out how to share the ram like L3 cache on a cpu.

Just grab a 7970/280/X, 380/380X or 290/390/X or a 570/580.

Keep it as a collectors piece if it's the reference design, or else don't bother with it.

A 7970 isn't even usable unless you only play overwatch at 1080p.

I've seen 7970s still pull their weight in a lot of recent games. It's a good medium-high 1080p card still.

That’s not entirely true, a friend of mine still games on a R9 280X @1080P and he doesn’t have any problems at high settings with decent frames

I don't know.... I had zero issues with my xfire 4890s and 6950s. I'm very sensitive to that stuff.

It's probably marketed as 2GB because it's two 1GB cards sandwiched together. I remember this with the "1GB" 7950GX2 ages ago. In reality it's only half that because the same data goes to both sets of vRAM, so you might have double the RAM, but you're also loading it up with double the data, so... moot point. 1GB is very likely not enough for new games... even the GTX1050 has at least 2GB.

I had two of them up till recently and still have a 5870 at home as well. Depending on the games your playing, maybe something around the era it was released until the higher Vram cards started appearing, it'll be fine for games :)

I remember running Dirt 2 across triple Dell 3008 screens...

I don't know.... I had zero issues with my xfire 4890s and 6950s. I'm very sensitive to that stuff.
The 5970 was having tons of those issues. I myself also had cfx 4850s and 5850s and also recall some stuttering issues with my many 5850s at the time

heh, i just tried sticking my 5870 in a computer to see if it would do well at a distributed computing project in the last couple of months. sadly, no.
it DID play a mean WoW a couple of years ago for the roomie.
i bet it would be somewhat decent if it had 2+GB of VRAM...

From everything I could gather on it it hovers around the HD 7970 GHz and GTX 680 in raw performance but when the VRAM gets pass 1GB it gets crippled
At best it's about 10-15% behind the 7950 or 680 when all are overclocked. And since it's just a 1GB card, triple monitor gaming is pretty much out of the question for most games from the last 5 years or so.
Honestly I'd look around for something else unless you like gaming on a hot, power sucking leaf blower. :p

It depends on what project you put it on, Cypress has reasonably good FP64 performance so it would actually run quite well with Milkyway@Home which focus' on FP64.
