It will probably end up on Wikipedia now. That seems to happen a lot around here.

This is pretty poor "fix" and just avoiding the issue but no problems for a day after disabling all hw playback of video from GPU and also disabled the hw playback of flash on GPU. Then tweak some with AMD GPU Clock tool.

Still one issue I can't seem to find a temporary fix is that using AMD GPU Clock tool or any similar makes my screen flicker every time I restart. Only a defaults reset from overdrive and reapplying the settings fixes the flickering.

Sorry if I am late to the party. Has anyone else here suffered a cold bug on their cards? I find if my watercooled 5970 drops down below 28C, the screen starts to flicker until it locks up. :(

kind of weird but I like working on my own Truck, I'm proud of the fact I can when so many can't on their own stuff and that this Truck is over 6 years old and got it over 3 years ago hasn't left me Stranded and I have put a considerable amt of Miles on it.

Well, after a clean Win 7 install (from RC to Retail) and a clean install of the 10.1 Hotfix drivers I put AMD Cool n Quiet back on.
Been playing GRID for a couple of races, but no stutter and no grey stripes anymore.

When I had the grey screen problem, the race before it would happen, there would always be a small stutter, little less than half a second. After that race was done and I got back to the loading screen, it would crash.
No such thing anymore (for now).

Thrackan, what you are describing sounds a lot like what I see when the coldbug hits. I get a little flicker, then bamn - lockup. :(

Coldbug in-game seems weird.

But it's not instant lockup: it's a short stall, then the next time (I think) there is a frequency shift the stuff goes grey.
So even if the stall happens in the first lap and I have like 5 to go, I can finish the race. I just know what's coming :D

The vertical stripes crash is hunting most of 5850/5870 users, me included :(

The 10.1 hot fix didn't solve all the issues, neither it was meant to, ati used "alleviate the problems".

By the way, prior to the end fo the month, a permanent official fix should be released. Let's hope for the best.

There is another thread on the gray stripes issue with some potential fixes in it, including flashing the BIOS to the latest version, disabling powerplay, etc...

I fixed vertical stripes underclocking from stock 865/1300 to 600/900 (lowest values from overdrive).
I'm afraid that my system can't somehow keep up with the too much powerfull gpu.
I've an intel i5 750, not doing overclocking.
I'm gonna do some oc to the cpu to see what happens.
I don't think (or I hope) the video card it's faulty.

I just traded in my GTX295 for a Sapphire 5870 and 30 bucks.

Currently, everything works flawless, card runs nice and cool and very quiet, every game runs phenomenal... BUT

DiRT 2, my only DX11 Game that I own, gives a black screen at the Menu, and I can't see anything, but can move around the menu blindly. I even managed to get into a race and kept driving my car into a wall and you could hear the crash. The game works perfectly fine except the Black-Screen.

Anyone have any idea's? This is my first ATi card since the ol' Sapphire X1900XTX I had.
Using Cat 10.2's. Thanks!

Make sure to get rid of ALL nVidia driver stuffs, uninstall it and use Driver Sweeper.
While you're at it, just to make sure, also get rid of all ATI drivers.

After that, reinstall the 10.2's and you should be fine...

Any newer ATI card coming out?

I know about the 5970 and 5870 but are there any faster ones expected soon?

I might sell my GTX295 for a different card for FSX.

I did all of that already.

I just played Stalker: Clear Skies and tried DX10.1 (Awesome, btw.. 4xAA smooth as butter with everything maxed @ 1920x1200)

I'm going to reinstall drivers again, right now just for the hell of it.

I'll be clear and quick on this one. Earlier I hinted in another thread about either the 5850 or 5870 purchase. However now a new question arises...And I THINK I know the answer to but I wanna be on the safe side. So with that being said, my question

Should I order the Sapphire 5850 Toxic? Or go with the XFX 5870 Cypress?

From my understanding, a Sapphire Toxic 5850 is damn near close and equal to that of the 5870...If this is the case, I'm going with the 5850 for obvious reasons

Yes, get the 5850. Save a hundred bucks, overclock it to 5870 speeds easily. The 160 shader difference between the cards makes very, very little difference.

yeah, I figured as much. That and with recent OC's of the 5850 Toxic, most have achieved around 880mhz/1250mhz.

However, the price difference between the Toxic 5850 and 5870 is only 50 bucks...Regardless, that's 50 bucks I save for other goodies down the road ;)
