ATI HD5XXX Series Discussion

I'm interested in seeing how this newest generation of cards do. I have a specific performance point in mind which I'm getting with an OCed 295... on water... but if I can get a single GPU on quiet air or water that beats it then I'm gonna be sold. So far it seems ATi would have the right idea IMO to widen the memory bandwidth. Fast memory is one thing, but they needed more beef to their architecture. Best of wishes to the next gen. :toast:
ALL that being said I agree, I like Nvidia's performance but dont like the color scheme It's like those Clariton commercials With ATI being the "Clariton clear" video card,If Nvidia had ATI's color scheme none of this post would matter to me, I'd be a Nvidia fan boy, but since they don't I can't wait to see these cards

Its not that unlikely, 40nm is much more efficient to produce, imagine how many units they would shift if it was that price and that performance, people would think it was a pricing mistake and buy 2 or 3 at once ha ha

Wow... No one should have problems playing Crysis with that lol. Too bad you need Windows 7 for DX11.

By the way, is Windows 7 getting a name? or is it just going to be called Windows 7?

Vista will have dx11 as well. The only reason xp never got dx10 wa because it was a lot of effort to port across as the driver model is completely different for xp as it is for vista so MS decided not to bother (plus the advantage of encouraging vista uptake).

as to the multi-core comment - our gpus are multi-core anyway, and it is more cost effective to put several small dies onto one board (3870x2, 4870x2, 4850x2) than it is to produce one large, expensive chip as the cost of each defective part is reduced and you'd get less defective parts, so we won't see large single dies consisting of 2 or 3 gpus worth of components but rather 2/3/4 small dies on one board (maybe stacked on top of each other, but manufactured seperately in a generation or three).

I would love to see someone just slap the ATI staff out the way and just taking the GPU.

Not that I condone slapping, but still there's not much they could do against someone bigger then them :p

Acctualy you can tell alot when it comes to heatsink and fan. If that was the video card pushin high frame rates at 30 inch resolutions and it has a small edged heatsink, cooling setup that could mean thats a med end card raping a 30 inch. I would love to see what the cooling is anyways and if its has the standard load HD 4870-4890 cooler :banghead:.

Ive botherd to read the first postings and it seems like numbers are right. the new rv870 might have 1200 stream procs, a 256-bit interface, and ddr5 at slightly higher clocks. That sounds about right for a 50% increase in performance cause 800/2=400 1200 - 400=800 50% increase might be a little less, might have a diffrent bit interface, or might have higher or lower clocks then a HD 4890. What i do like though, is that the HD 5XXX x2 could have 2400 stream procs, 512-bit interface and so on. Its like 3 way HD 4870 crossfirex yayayay!!! :D.

i'd like to see ati release their card with a 384-bit bus, that'd mean 768mb ram minimum which would be good as i hate getting slow downs in stalker clear sky because i don't have enough memory(512mb). there's just a lot of good things we've been hearing bout the HD 5870, lets hope it comes through and has the performance of an HD 4870x2, though i dout it. Sadly i think the GT300 will have close to GTX 295 performance

I suspect we will see multi-core GPUs very soon. (Hint, hint)
Ooohhh...
Something like 128, 192, 216, 240, 320 or even flaming 800 cores perhaps?
Oh. Wait.

Really, native one-die multicore GPU, nor glued MCM packaged GPU doesn't make any sense.

I doubt it, its a new gpu so it could be slower, could be faster, nobody really knows,

I don't understand why people are so interested to look at the hardware, you won't be able to tell to much with its heatsinks+fans anyway XD

Heat dissipation, and thus die size/transistor count based on previous 40nm models.

So if it is like the 4770 and has a two slot cooler, moving air out the back, and ATI continues the leaf blower legacy......

A somewhat linear increase in the processing HP, with a assumed heat disipation, causes the funny feeling in ATI users also associated with strip clubs, climbing a rope, and long walks on the beach at sunset.

Chiphell really really thinks that the 5870 will have 1600SP and so do I, So I am waiting for 1600SP, and if it costs about 300 I'm buyin one. . . . . or 2

the reference heatsink they used in the demo(matches the one chiphell previewed) looks ugly though, still, who stays with stock, lol

yeah thats what I always thought when someone said multicore GPU... I always go "its already multicore as hell"...

But I guess manufacturing costs and risk of a FUBAr'D GPU drop when there is the option to build the top of the line offering with an MCM package.

A shader is a RISC core... Nvidia has 240/216/192 "cores" while AMD has 160 super-scalar cores with 4 partial cores attached to each super-scalar core - so that totals 160*5 = 800 shaders.

Basically each "shader" is the equivalent of a core. That is why GPU's are so good at threaded tasks (CUDA) / FOLDING / Encoding... because these are multi-threaded tasks, and the GPU can do up to 240/800 operations per cycle. This the whole basis of CUDA and OpenCL.

All AMD is doing is separating the cores into a multi-die assembly, so that they can stick two good dies together, which are smaller and have better yields, into a larger die.

Nvidia on the other hand, is still making a single die GPU. Which IMO is a mistake - the bigger and more complex the assembly gets, the more economical a modular assembly is.

dual core is a misnomer... it should be dual-die or MCM... All they are doing is mitigating the risk of faulty dies during manufacturing by making easier to make pieces and gluing them together afterwards.
