ATI Radeon X1600XT - Playing games on my PC leads to shut down

Hi,

I have recently built a new computer (details in signature) with a ATI Radeon X1600XT video card. Windows works fine, but whenever I start a game, the computer simply shuts down after a few minutes. It doesn't restart or freezes, it shuts down like it would if I turned off the computer. The more demanding the game (e.g. Oblivion) the less it takes for the shutdown to occur. I have tried changing the PCI express clock frequency to no avail, and tried different DDR Ram memory sticks and it's not that. The CPU is not overheating (it sits at a top of 100 F/36 C), neither is the motherboard or seemingly the video card. The 12V 4 pin auxiliary power supply is connected properly etc. I installed all the recent ATI Catalyst drivers and also an hotfix that ATI had to solve any incompatibilities with the nVidia nForce4 chipset. I am a bit at a loss, do you guys have any ideas?

R.

It is actually a Gecube Radeon X1600 XT. The heatsink wasn't sitting properly on top of the chip, so I had to remove the heating, clean the chip (the conductive gel was flaky and dried out) and reapply the gel. In showed a bit of improvement but it still shut down after half an hour. I am just going to return it and go for nVidia. Those Gecube guys just used crappy gel and I guess the chip ended up being damaged by constant overheating and sudden shutdowns.

Why nVidia? Just because 1 ATI card (from GeCube) didn't work, you're going for nVidia?

Ati reported compatibility issues with nForce4 motherboard chipsets. To avoid this wouldn't it be preferable to go for nVidia instead?

What nVidia card are you planning to get?

I am actually considering the nVidia Geforce 7600 GT 256MB DDR3 PCI-E. It seems it outperforms the ATI x1600 XT and is almost as good as the nVidia 7800 which is twice the price.

So's the X1600XT judging from some reviews. I have a reasonable spaceous case with a big fan in the front and another on the side, plus the PSU has two fans. Any suggestions for other video cards?

thanks, it looks really good. MY only issue is that if there is a compatibility issue with the nForce 4 chipset in the motherboard I am still stuffed.

I am having the same problem, but it only started about three weeks ago while my computer has been in its current state for a few months. Same symptoms, if i start up a game my computer will randomly shutdown as if i had pulled the cord. The first time it happened I thought my apartment lost power, but i went into my roommates room and he was still playing WOW. Only thing with mine is that it will happen at completely random intervals. It could let me play for hours or 3 minutes, no matter which game.

This is really beginning to anger me as I have worked hard for my computer, got all of the pieces i wanted, assembled it, keeping the file system clean and streamlining it for maximum output...then the damn thing powers down as I am closing an Oblivion gate.

So from what i have read it seems that no one has figured out if the card is sucking up too much power and tripping something or if there is just an incompatability that randomly freaks out.

Good thing i found this, i was about to head out and pick up a bigger PSU thinking i was sucking up too much juice.

System specs:
480w PSU (can't think of the brand)
Asus A8N-E Mobo
AMD X2 Dual-Core 3800
ATI Saphire X1800XTX 512mb PCI-E
2X 10k RPM WD 74gb Raptor HDs
2X 7200 RPM WD 320gb HDS
2 gigs of Corsair Valueselect DDR 3200
Creative Soundblaster X-FI Platinum

I am having the exact same problem with my computer, but as I am as rich as some and not that much of a hardcore gamer spending more on my graphics card than the worth of the rest of my PC I have recently bought an old outdated x800xl AGP type.

I am having this problem playing World of warcraft it can be anywhere from 15min to and hour and it seems to actually shutdown the PC not just turn off, the monitor goes first then a couple of minutes later the PC, if I turn it back on straight away the screen is blank (no signal) and it will shutdown again within a couple of minutes.

Anyone have any ideas on WTF is wrong here?

I use:
3.2 P4 Prescott
Gigabyte GA-8S648FX-L motherboard
2x512 meg DDR
various other usual crap u find in a PC.:banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
