I don't have any firm suggestions.

What I can tell you, is to decide whether you want 2.0 audio, or 5.1+, and buy a suitable amp.

For real decent audio, your budget is going to limit you a bit, but you can get a really decent pair of speakers in bookshelf format, and a very decent stereo amplifier within your budget, for sure. No subwoofer needed. I really suggest going stereo, as this will allow you a fair bit of leeway in what you can buy.

Also, buy your speakers new, but get a used amplifier.

A pair of basic Polk/Energy/B&W)speakers and a decent second hand stereo amplifier from Marantz/Thule/NAD will get you very far. There are many other decent brands just a quick google turns up at least a dozen of sites that have experience with current generation mid-end stuff from all the quality oriented brands.

I think most has already been said & suggested above (good suggestions too, I might add).
Personally, I'm not so fond of Polk, but that may just be me.
Apart from getting aforementioned speakers, you may want to look at higher-specced Yamaha or Onkyo receivers - they have deals on these around the world every few months or so.

Good luck mate & please let us know what you end up with! :toast:
