So after a couple years long break, I want to get my gaming rig back running. I'm gonna upgrade to the fastest ram I can get and I need recommendations on the gpus. I had 2 290s that did well. I want to go green team this time unless amd has something better for the price. My brother tells me the 295x2 would be good, but I don't know. As for the budget, I know 2 980s is a little over a grand. So throw some thoughts my way.

if you are wanting to do 4k gaming I recommend anything with 6gb or more vram. The more the merrier, 980ti 6gb or 390/x 8gb or better.

4gb of hbm is just as good as 8gb of gddr5 but how much better can you really get that you have now.. i just see you paying a lot for mostly added vram grunt and granted it is more important at 4k.
i would have to say fury or nano crossfire is a good now choice if your not willing to wait for the new gpu's. they might actually give some performance to wow about.. at the least make current high end gpu's cheaper.
4gb 980 sli would only trade blows with what you have now and the 295x2 is pretty much what you have now with a little bit better latency and 4gb of effective vram.

The 295x2 is basicly 2 290s in CFX.
Effective vram on it is 8 gigs, 4gigs on both chips.
This card is F.....G AWESOME.
A friend of mine ordered 1 off ebay, and called me to set it up for him as he didnt know how.
It is a champ non the less.
It kills any titan with 12 gigs od ram, any day.
It is a card that is meant to be ran at 4k and nothing less.
Only problem is power requirements.
IT PULLS CLOSE TO 500W WHICH IS INSANE.

HBM vram is not that much of a performance boost on cards like nano or fury.
And 4GB of HBM vram it is not the same as 8GB GDDR5 vram. 4GB HBM VS 4GB GDDR5 is still 5-10% difference.
While 4GB HBM VRAM runs faster than the GDDR5 version, 8GB GDDR5 can handle double the amount and still get good performance, which is why Nvidia still run on GDDR5.

yeah your right hbm is actually better.. ya know its actually a good thing to be able to use a smaller pool that much more effectively that it could be described as having double the capacity when compared. still a bit strange tho but it has more reason than your half misinformation.

Don't bother with the 295x2 for 4K. It sucks massively. AMD are pretty awful with their crossfire profiles and talking with developers, so you rarely see crossfire working when a new title releases. I still can't run the new Tomb Raider in crossfire mode because it crashes my PC.

Most of the time I end up running 4K on a single core.

Do yourself a favour and just buy the biggest single GPU you can afford.

Effective vram on it is 8 gig

Apparently you have no idea how crossfire works.

Benchmark Scores 3050 scores good 15-20% lower than average, despite ASUS's claims that it has uber cooling.
For what it's worth, 980 is not that far from your 290:

If you have the money, go 2x 980 Ti, nothing comes close to those. Other than that I'd recommend 2x 390 or 390X, because they have 8 GB Ram and you need as much Ram as you can get for 4K playing. 4GB can be enough too, but not always and in every situation. So that's why I'm with the R9 390(X) and not with the Nano's or 980s. In short: money efficient: 390/390X. Maximum performance: 2x 980 Ti (custom).

This. My 290x crossfire is awesome...when it can be utilized to its fullest. I personally think you should wait with what you have until new GPUs drop. I'm personally hoping the die shrink combined with the architecture refinements since the last shrink will make the next round of GPUs efficient little beasts in a very small package and I would hate to spend that kind of cash only to be left in the dust 9 months later by a new GPU.

Checked Google for a review. Here's TechSpot comparing 2x GTX 980 Ti vs 2x Radeon Fury X. Pick the game you think you'll be playing the most, look at benchmarks for both.

HAHA you have 2 290's OMG put your money away and wait for the nm shrink, surly you can wait it's not like you have a low end card or cards even.

So do your self a solid and just save the money until one or both release the next cards.
