back up hard drive

I'd like to put a second hdd in my rig for back up. If it was only used to store files and not run programs on, would it be safe from incoming viruses? Or is this wishfull thinking?

it would only cost a few dollars extra to get an external backup drive with one button backup feature.

once a week or every few days back up your files and you can never lose more than a few days of recent stuff.

anything connected to the file system can be infected but so can external backup drives like i was talking about, so nothing is really safe however viruses almost always attack the operating system so what your trying to do will be good insurance against loosing your files but not really safe. the benefit with external backup is you take it with you and can share your files easier.
