I have Acronis True Image and I am sick of its shortcomings, bugs and pathetic performance.
I'm looking for alternatives, doesn't matter if free or paid.
All I need is decent and responsive interface and enough backup settings to configure it however I like.

Any tips?

Macrium Refelct is a popular free alternative, but I favor Shadow Protect Desktop, long recognized as "the Gold Standard". I only use it to image a small OS drive / partition, usually an SSD. As for every day usage, to protect data, I find FBackup suits all my needs. After the 1st backuo, it takes about 2-3 minutes tops to run a backup if our peer network server which it does twice a day and noon and 7 pm

I'm partial to Image for Windows by Terabyte. Cheap, scheduled backups, completely configurable. Has its own shadow copy software, or uses Windows'.

Active Disk Image, been using it exclusively for year, never had any issues, and it's free too.

Only drawback is that it can't do a direct copy from one disk to another, you have to save to image and then restore from image.

Add another for Macrium Reflect Free. It'll do full and differential backups. If you prefer incremental backup schemes, prepare to purchase or look elsewhere. Overall though, Macrium is a solid option. I use it regularly both personally and professionally. Though admittedly it's a lower tier option professionally, where Storagecraft and Veeam are the bigger better solutions.

There's also a free version of Veeam as well, I prefer the Enterprise version of course but was also content with Veeams free solution and it's capabilities.

Only drawback is that it can't do a direct copy from one disk to another, you have to save to image and then restore from image.

Macrium Reflect Free also does this. I use this very regularly for drive migrations. Even to smaller SSDs, handles it like a champ. :)

Thanks for jogging my memory@Kursah!

EasUSToDo Free also does full, differential, incremental backups, as well as separate backups of libraries if you want.

EasUS ToDo backup. Free version is excellent.

https://www.easeus.com/backup-software/personal.html
I'm trying the trial now.
The backup process is about twice as slow as that of True Image, which is something I thought impossible.

I'm also somewhat confused by the settings when it deleting old backups. In TI, you can simply specify to delete everything and start with a full backup after x days or x backups.

Some of these "free" ones will throttle the speed at which backups occur, I noticed this with Veeam's free solution as well, it took about 1.5-2X longer than Windows Server Backup on my home server. Macrium however doesn't seem to have that issue, but I prefer incremental backup schemes. So for my server, I'm sticking with WSB for now. Local systems I use a mix of File History for more regular backups (not as worried about having a full image TBH), and a Macrium full here and there when I feel a full image backup is necessary.

On my side, Acronis True Image has been robust for almost a decade now even if I am still using the 2010 version on my windows 7 system. Saved me from formats many times.

There are settings for that as well, but their UI can use some work to improve.

I don’t understand? I don’t have it in front of me but you just go into the menu and designate a backup location.

I use Seagate discwizard, I believe it's built off of acronis though , but i liked it better. Really easy to clone, I don't know if I've use the back up function. It works for a hard drive's as well as solid-state

Most of these backup solutions store the backed up files in a proprietary format, such as "pbd". Not sure about which one you installed, but with most of the software, you also have the ability to browse thru that file, and take out any files that you want to recover one at a time. If that doesn't answer your question, you may need to be a little clearer.

If you just want to back up files and make a mirror image of your data files, then as indicated in previous post, you won't find an easier solution than FBackup.

As far as your OS ....

Disk imaging creates a compressed version of your drive.
Disk cloning creates and exact, uncompressed copy of your drive

https://blog.storagecraft.com/disk-imaging-vs-disk-cloning/

Options with Macrium Refelct:

https://www.sevenforums.com/backup-restore/214827-macrium-reflect-cloning-imaging.html

Other options include Shadow Protect (not free but you get what you pay for), clonezilla, Acronis, DriveImage XML , FogProject

You can also use manufacturer's disk migration utilities to do the same thing but these are usually manufacturer specific.

Let me check that.
Individual File Recover
EaseUS image files can be directly accessed. You can double click on the .PBD image file or right click it and choose open to browse it. Find the target file, right click it to display the menu, and then open, copy and recover specified files in the image.

Again, as I said above: "Most of these backup solutions store the backed up files in a proprietary format, such as "pbd". "

If you just want a "copy" solution, and not a solid backup solution, there aren't any really good options for "live" disks while you're using them. You could try RSync, which is a linux based solution, altho in combination with Cygwin, it can be used to copy files as-is from one location to another in a Windows environment.

Macrium Reflect 7 - I haven't used it but users have recommended it here. They have a free version and a paid version.
Sadly it will not work if there's anything wonky with the source drive at all. It has to be perfectly healthy for it. So it's best to only use Macrium before SHTF situations. If you got a drive on the verge of kickin a bucket your're SOL with it. Tried it with 2 Seagate drives I wanted to clone (and the same drives work with anything else including the notoriously bad paragon one). Lost my paragon license so I had to settle for macrium and no matter what I tried it would fail :(

Paragon's ok and works with wonky drives and isn't picky, but the UI is cingeworthy.

For cloning I just use the samsung drive tool and for fidget spinner drives I use the branded acronis that's free.
