Early access releases today. I've been looking forward to a more updated Baldur's Gate game. From the videos I've watched, it looks fantastic and knowing its being developed by the gang that made Divinity, well I am very excited.

Launch times later today: 10:00 PDT / 13:00 EDT / 18:00 BST
Wiki: https://baldursgate3.wiki.fextralife.com/Baldur's+Gate+3+Wiki

Releasing on Steam, GOG and Stadia
It has a 150GB HDD requirement.

Now if you don't mind a few spoilers, this review from someone who spent 15 hours in the early access is quite negative. Being a big self proclaimed D&D player/fan he was not happy with this game at all and would like his 15 hours back. :) https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2020...access-mediocre-rpg-amazing-rendering-engine/

Again spoilers: this review seems to enjoy the game much more so far, (he is into his third hour of the game at time of writing his article.) His review is more positive for sure.

It is a 150GB download though.
I'm guessing most PC gamers will go with the Stadia version???
FYI, GoG is stating the game is 67.0GB in the early access version. Larian stated the game would be around 70GB at launcg but recommend to plan for 150GB.
When will it leave early access?
They have not released a hard date for that

From the Steam forums: "We anticipate Baldur's Gate 3 being in Early Access for at least one year but we'll have to see how it goes. It'll be ready when it's ready.”

Also, the game released earlier than expected. I've purchased it and will download shortly. Steam is getting hammered though so it might take longer than usual.

Early access for a story driven game is pure spoiler.

Or? your second or third play through might be after full release. These games tend to be played multiple times.

I will get this game at some point & it's 100% certain I will get the GOG version.

The couple of games I've picked up since last October and any games my younger brother has purchased have been through GoG or Uplay - we've not supported Valve since they've released a broken UI and have yet to fix it.

I've been waiting for this game to come out on GoG and with how much my brother has enjoyed the Divinity Original Sin games, he's super excited to see another game from Larian Studios. He's planning on picking up two copies of this game on GoG; one for him and one for me (basically he just sends me money via paypal to pay for the game) once it officially releases. Him and I have already sunk 150 hours into DOS:II and we're only about 2/3 of the way through the game. Lots of entertainment value for us so we're hoping Balduer's Gate 3 will provide the same.

While I'm excited and love D:OS 1&2, I'm a bit worried they didn't manage to capture the feeling of the original games based in what I've seen.

Some of the GOG user reviews have pretty much said the same thing. That “feel” should be there already. The next year is not likely to get that part fixed. It will be concentrated on other areas as yet incomplete.

I believe I am going to wait until this game is complete. They are charging an exorbitant amount for an unfinished game.

My buddy is saying the same thing. He doesn't want to pay full price to test an incomplete game. Totally understandable. My perspective is a little different. I can pay $59 now and goof around with an incomplete game and maybe add some input to the forums (Larian does seem to listen to their player base to a point) or wait until release and pay $59 then. I see no difference as to when i pay, but like the idea of getting a chance to play now. Maybe it will be an incomplete experience but it will still be fun!

This is D:OS 3... I love it, but if you're a fan of the original or BG2, it isn't that.

Yeah... I love D:OS, but I just wish they didn't claim the BG3 title. Feels like FO3 all over again, makes me sad. Still, if the game's good, I will play it and try and ignore the legacy.

Wizards of the Coast wouldn't let Larian make a DOS game. So no I do not think this is DOS3 at all. It's without a doubt a D&D rule set game. Unfortunately since Larian is so well known for this kind of game already and both games (DOS and BG3) do share similar style, then people will feel like they are playing a DOS3 game. Many people have never even played the original Baldur's Gate games. Many people have no idea what a D&D game should be like. Many people owned and loved DOS1 & 2 and can only compare BG3 to those.

That said, it's different enough to be BG3 and using the rule set 5e from D&D again makes it different and WotC do have a hand and say in it's development so I would not and don't personally worry much about it. DOS1 and 2 were great games but I always felt like both were missing something for me. I only played them because I wanted a D&D game experience that was more up to date with prettier graphics. I was never truly satisfied though.

I'm not saying BG3 is perfect so far, or that it will even be great. It is on the right path though and it is a lot of fun. I'm willing to bet that when it releases there will be many satisfied players. Larian is a good dev and even though I wish they completely started from scratch and did not try to just take their game and what they know and turn it into D&D I still have high hopes that it will be different enough and much more fun than any past DOS game to date.

Being a P&P player back in the late 70's and early 80's, I have always loved the idea of a video game for D&D but I didn't get my first PC until around 2000 and at that time it could barely play any games let alone BG1. It was a few years before I had a decent gaming rig and was full into the hobby. By then PC gaming was still not big deal to me as I had always gravitated towards consoles. By the time I discovered games like Baldur's Gate, the graphics were so outdated that I couldn't bring myself to even try them. I'm crossing my fingers that this game will turn out great.

In the mean time I can always play some Pathfinder to get my kinda D&D fix while I wait for BG3 to flesh out.

Be very vocal on their forums. They do seem to care about what we the players want.

Yep, I'm not touching it. I have patience.

While I'm excited and love D:OS 1&2, I'm a bit worried they didn't manage to capture the feeling of the original games based in what I've seen.

I don't think you should look for an Infinity Engine-like CRPG, because let's face it... the game doesn't use that engine. It was the engine that made the games what they were. Static backgrounds with interactive objects offered their own kind of puzzles and mystery, isometric, etc. In terms of the roleplaying elements, I think DOS gets pretty close regardless - the writing has flair, surprises, and originality, much like Baldur's Gate had since the first part, while also being serious enough to give it weight. It won't be the exact same style... but these aren't the same devs.

Pathfinder was mentioned, I think that is a recent game that gets closer to the original BG feel. Its just too bad the overall story progression is a bit of a drag, though it does try to capture the 'make your grand adventure and rule a kingdom' thing. Making the inevitable 'stronghold' the focal point of the game perhaps wasn't the best design decision for that title, but otherwise in terms of party building and combat its a great game to play.

I think Pathfinder Kingmaker or Pillars of Eternity series have that OG 'Baldurs Gate' feel to them. Don't get me wrong - I much prefer this -- and am going to a LAN tonight to play the hell out of it with 3 friends tonight. But to those who grew up with Baldurs Gate II as a main PC game, if you covered up the title and made them guess what game it is, I don't think 'Baldurs Gate' would be the first guess.

Take this in comparison to say. DOOM or QUAKE franchises. Doom is definitely still doom - different engine, different moves weapons etc. But it still feels and plays so much like the original that it's hard to mistake.

I kind of want the sub classes to come out... The jump mechanic makes me want to build a rogue monk that jumps around and double slaps people for backstab damage.

Not any more it's 60GB from steam, and OMG she might not be ablr to act but i am 99.9% sure that's Claudia Black, always wish there was more of her in D3, don't think she can act but her voice acting is next to none.

HOTFIX #10

Hello everyone,

We’ve just rolled out a new hotfix for you!

This one goes out to all of you (and us) who have clearly angered the RNG Gods in a former life and been cursed to fail dice rolls at every turn.

We introduced loaded dice in Patch 4 to try to smooth out the extremes of the dice-rolling bell curve. Even with this change, we noticed in your feedback that the RNG wasn't feeling fun for you. We've seen the dice described as being harsh, cursed, rigged and someone said the RNG was downright evil. We want you to have the best experience possible when playing the game and so the changes in today’s hotfix are here to help with your hit chance, if you’re playing with loaded dice.

From now on, loaded dice will only bend RNG in the rolling character's favour. That means you will not be made to miss to make up for a lucky streak of hits. This change also applies to NPC's and enemies, so the effects on the relative challenge of combat should be minimal.

Wake me when the game is finished. Patches that fix minor things and cause the need to completely start the game over are not selling the game.

Hotfix #11

Hello Everyone!

Today’s small hot-fix focuses on solving some bugs & crashes getting in the way of your adventures.

Each time you play the game, you help us to find these sorts of issues and your support tickets, Forum and Reddit posts help us narrow down issues, too. Thank you for being with us through Early Access, it means the world to us.

We will be back soon with a larger community update, that goes into some detail about how we process & parse feedback and data we get through talking with you, and the telemetry we have in the game. ‘Til then, sit tight!

Changelist:

  • Fixed a crash when stepping out of running water
  • Fixed a rare crash related to animation states
  • Fixed a crash when party members use jump to follow
  • Fixed behaviour scripting causing crashes when starting a dialog fails
  • Fixed thread safety issue in Physx

Not much sadly.
