Basic, free video creation software

Hi
I'm trying to merge a few short videos of mine into one, could you recommend some free piece of software that can do that ? Only thing I'm asking for is 1080p/60 fps compability, but if it has other useful functions that'd be nice.

Been using VirtualDub and Windows Movie maker for simple tasks, but the last one was removed along with the entire Windows Live essentials package for Win10...
Also, if at some point in the future you'll want to do some advanced stuff, then there is nothing better at it than Blender (amongst free/opensource software packages I mean).

It's a very rich video editor which is also entirely free. Imagine GIMP, but for video editing. It is a bit weird to handle, but when you get the hang of it, it's quite nice. All others are riddled with stupid watermarks or limitations, this one isn't.

Not the OP, but this looks like a really good tool. My local animal shelter currently uses some crappy watermarked android app to put their social media videos together at super low res, so I am doing a bit of pro bono consulting work for them. I'm no A/V guy but I think I can fumble my way around this. Thanks for the tip!

I had some problems with openshot. It somehow could not do a montage of videos I recorded with shadwoplay in wolfestein 2. Tried twice, the exported video was just a blank screen. Also, you need a hell of a CPU for openshot, my 5775c OC is sweating like a pig.

This is while working with two short 1080p/60 videos, just minor cropping with no added effects. Not exporting or converting, just dragging the sliders to crop them at the beginning and at the end. RAM usage climbs to 13 GB and CPU is often pegged at 95-100%. I believe using this software on a 4 core without HT, 8GB of RAM and a HDD must be slow as hell, and it shouldn't be.

Also, a word on open shot. I do not recommend it. It is easy to use and the interface is pretty easy, but:

1. cropping videos doesn't work, the video that is output (exported) after the files are cropped has all sorts of weird shit going on, like blank screens, artifacts and bad sound. Videos that are not cropped or tampered with in any way work well though.

2. it is a resource hog like I mentioned above

Try checking out Davinci Resolve, they have an awesome video editor/ color grader. They have a free version that uses your GPU for acceleration. Works great. I can edit in 4k using an i5 4690k and an Nvidia GTX 950 without issues.

A hundred likes for Da Vinci, it's absolutely amazing by freeware standards. Feels like a premium product.

Doesn't use GPU though, it's all CPU work. But it feels faster and much more responsive than openshot, it uses less than half of RAM that openshot used.

Okay, I just learned that CPU bottleneck is a thing in video editing as well. My GPU usage was only 8-10% cause the CPU was at 95% or higher. However, I tried using quicktime format instead of h.264 and rendering in 2560x1440, and CPU usage dropped to ~85% while GPU is now at 20-35%. I guess you really need 8/16 at minimum for video editing.

Nevertheless, creating videos is only a temporary pastime to me, and da vinci is still a lot more than I could ask for free.
