Battlefield 2: SpecialForces - Download it like Steam

Electronic Arts is going the same way like Valve with their Steam.
The Battlefield 2 AddOn SpecialForces could be already bought and downloaded, but played first on 22th november, but that's also 2 days earlier than on the retail market.
But many people want to have a nice looking box and cd in their hands... but let's see what the future brings!

Also, I'm getting the box edition. There's no way I would just download it over having the box when they cost exactly the same.

I'm still on dial-up... it would be a week-long challenge to download any games! Took a few hours on the internet just to get half life 2 working after buying the DVD.

I'm sticking to getting the disks.

Yeah, isn't that a pain? Even on cable it took forever to actually play after buying the retail box of the game!

First of all Steam style systems are the way of the future and in 5-6 years from now 90% of all software will be purchased this way. Second downloading it is faster if you take into account driving to the store to purchase it or waiting for it to come in the mail. Thirdly, what the fuck is dialup?

Firstly, in the future more people might have broadband to download these crap. Secondly, I think you're mistaken, unless you mean you want to drive at least 2000km to the store? And thirdly, if you don't know what dialup is you don't deserve your internet connection.

I had dialup from '89-'98. In computer years that's like three generations ago. Most people DO have broadband. Downloading should only take 2.5 hours. That's not long. Especially since you can start the download and then go accomplish other tasks instead of driving all over town, sitting in traffic, trying to find a store that has it in-stock. What an in-efficient way of living your life. If you don't have broadband, chances are you don't have a good enough computer to play the game anyway.

All companies will be starting to use Steam like software delivery systems soon. Stop living like a caveman.

We'll stop living like cavemen when you stop talking crap...

You talk about accomplishing other tasks - you do realise most people have to go to shops at some point anyway, and getting a game will probably be a two minute part of their shopping trips... bet it takes you longer than that to get your computer going, enter the credit card info if you need it and actually start the download. Plus, you can order a game online before its release, and have it delivered the day it comes out, without losing your internet connection for the 2.5 hours anyway. The size of a game download will often be a huge chunk of users monthly limits.

And internet connection means nothing to how good your computer is. Loads of people have great PCs but don't bother with broadband - students are one example who often don't have internet at all but good PCs. Out of all the people that have the internet, broadband occupies just over 50% of the market...and as some people don't have the internet, this means that less than half the population has broadband. So most people will still be buying games in shop for the time being.

I think you should get out more. Some people, belive it or not, come into the sun once in a while which you obviously don't mr. caveman. You'd rather sit and watch something download or order it online because it's "efficient". Really. I'd rather get the exercise. And broadband isn't nearly that accessible. If I were to have unlimited money and a kick ass system, here in SA you can't get proper broadband anyway. So stop being so idealistic.

Dunno about you guys, but I'd rather have a real disk of any software I buy, than relying on making backups of software I download on CD-Rs or DVD-Rs that wont last for more than three years.
Have you ever tried to use a CD-R you've stored for more than 3 years? Chances are that one in every five CD-Rs won't work anymore, even if you keep them stored in their jewel boxes...
I think most CD-R or DVD-R companies won't tell ppl about the short half life these discs have, original disks on the other hand can last for decades.
So that's why I prefer to get an original disk if I'm paying for it, than downloading and then making a backup of it using unreliable media...
