A few years ago I dropped 60 odd quid on two pairs of 2150rpm GTs as part of a HiFi amplifier project. Long story short the amplifier got put on hold and two of the fans found their way into my personal rig.

I've actually been running them for around 2 years now, their aerodynamic performance seems very good, they move a lot of air without much fan noise at all. However, earlier this year the fan that I have mounted in the rear panel as an exhaust started getting pretty noticeable bearing noise at lower RPMs. On the other hand the fan I have mounted as a top intake did not make any similar noise despite being installed for the same amount of time.

The main factors I isolated are running time, orientation, and temperature.

I run my rig basically 24/7 unless I am out of town, so for the most part everything is running at least at idle, I probably get around 6-8 hours a day of gaming load on it a day so it gets a lot of use, the fans are basically always running. That said, given that only one of the fans exhibited the symptom, it is not particularly relevant here.

I am unsure as far as the other factors, I wouldn't have expected a ~10c difference in temperatures for a few hours of day to be something that has a big effect on the lubrication within the bearing, though my knowledge as far as the specific substances used is limited so there could be some interaction I am not aware of. Orientation is a plausible possibility from my view, the asymmetric loading on the bearing could have a big influence on performance and wear. The design of the bearing has a big influence in this aspect.

I am also considering the possibility of a manufacturing flaw or inconsistency between the two fans.

So far I have swapped the two fans but kept the same airflow configuration, however it appears that the problem is resurfacing anyway, which leads me to believe that the problem is more in the construction of the bearings and the way they handle radial loads. Anyone else know of this being an issue?

I got in the habit of just re-oiling all my fan's once a year. Couple fan's are over 7 years old, the CM932 fan's are from 2010 iirc and it keep's them nice and quiet. That said there is one old Corsair molex fan that I have oiled in between a couple time's when I notice a lil more noise. Since about 2012 I ran 24/7 all fan's set to Max in BIOS except for a SanAce1011 got it on a 7volt line cooling the front a CM 4in3 Cage for HDD's.

I will probably do that, though these would be the first fans I ever have to re oil...

I too have had bearing issues with GT fans when they finally came back onto the market. I imported a pair of Darkside GT pwm fans and one of them developed a rattle a few months down the line. I was gutted as they did cost me a pretty penny to obtain but I wanted to have the best etc etc.

Finally settled with some Corsair ML fans though
