Hi all been gone from the forum for a while but needed to build my son a budget gaming / video editing rig. He just graduated from high school, so it was gift.

I bought him a

Im not sure I know what Im doing anymore but it seemed like a decent little rig. It went together without a hitch. It looks like it will Oc if I would want it to, but he won't be doing that. I think the power supply can handle the video card and the Cpu was budget but appears to be decent for $89.00.

APU was decent but his monitor(has 2.5 K wide screen monitor) and the games he plays were a bit much for it. Tooth, hi old friend, what should I have done. Did I miss out on some potential.

After, he tried it for a bit. Also the program he uses for video editing can use the dedicated card as well.

So if the point was video editing and games, why even start with a quad APU? Why not a real chip like a 3500 or 3600? Why not begin with a real GPU and not be stuck with a half useless chip.

Not sure I knew the difference anymore. Thought all the new AMD chips came with APUs and it was the cheapest one but after realized it was a tiny bit underpowered Gpu wise after he used it. Educate me because I have been out of the game for a bit.

That's coming across as a bit negative there.
With a basic Motherboard a low power APU is better, even if paired with a GPU. (imo)

A 2500 or 2600 would have been so much more useful.

Yeah prices are probably less than when the build was done but for $22, 8 more threads and 2 more cores? That should be pretty obvious.

Based on a 2600. *shrugs*
Compared to a 3600 there is a greater price difference.
Although better on paper the 3600 will use more power and place a greater strain on those 4 power stages.
My 3200G is a very capable CPU for daily use, but not for gaming.

It's a SFF/low power processor. It's not a teenager gamer kind of chip. Think something that plays old or not intensive games like League or CS:GO.

Seems, so far, not to lag the the GPU. I will look at the 2600 never even saw it when I was building the rig . A lot of item are sold out due to shortages or were when I was building it.

Depends on the games, it's gonna hold it back sooner or later. Honestly your best bet would be getting a board that can do a 3600 and call it good for a few years (besides that 570, that might be an issue but who knows what games are being played.)

4 Cores up to 4.0GHz should cope with most GPUs, although 6 Cores is better in some games.

The overall negative attitude of @Toothless for over half the thread is probably why the general tone of the forum has gone downhill of recent times (15+ year viewer/lurker/reader/"contribution artist" of TPU)... maybe a bit more of a friendly attitude is in order... seeing as the one who possess knowledge should always be humble with their teachings.......



I was here to read only; but I needed to comment on this silly stuff... supporters should be a model of the community... not the exact opposite.

I wouldn't say negative, just not as gentle. If people are going to call out me being negative I'd like to see it be more widespread across the forum as I've seen others have the same attitude but no one says a thing.

Anyway going back to the topic at hand, whichever of the chips you listed may it be used or not would be a pretty good improvement over the non-SMT quad that's in there already.

Thanks for the impute, looks like the 2600 on newegg is $208.00 which was a bit out of my budget. I paid $89.00 for the 3200g and it had very good performance reviews. Might be good for a future update but when I first did the build was going a bit cheap.The build kinda changed as I went because I am not up to the snuff on everything anymore. He's using a 2.5 k wide screen display and plays the basic teenager crap. LOL Does fishing Videos on Youtube etc... wants to bee John B if you know who that is. LOL

I'll say the 3xxx series is amazingly solid, no issues whatsoever as long as you keep the chip cool which isn't hard to do with the stock cooler. As long as your board can handle it of course.

My old crappy intel rig listed here still seems to game decent, so I was going on what I knew at the time and budget. His rig seems to do well, but it appears I missed a few things, and I did ask. I wonder if this budget board can handle that cpu, I think it can. Something to think on.


Something else I was wondering, does the APU work in concert with the dedicated GPU? Or does it go dormant when the dedicated Gpu is plugged in.
