Hey,

I've upgraded just about every other part of my PC, and I'm feeling my speakers are lacking a bit.

So I'm looky for the best set of 2.1 Speakers I can get for around £30 (I will only spend more if it is genuinely justified)

So far I have come up with:

Creative Inspire T3100

Logitech X-230

Lmk what you guys think

Out of the 2, the Logitech is a more powerful system, so I'd go for that.

But then I have had some people say despite the RMS rating the Creatives are better. Its so

I've had my x-230's for years, they've performed great, they have good sound, hi's, low's, vocal's all good for movies, games, music. Pretty damn powerful sub. I'd definately recommend them. I got my G/F a set of budget 2.1 Creatives, not sure of the model, but their sound is distant, empty, bass seems off note compared to the full sounding logitechs.

Probably not as handy, they're a budget line SBS340 series 2.1 set...cost me maybe 20 bucks US last year. The x-230's cost me about 35 shipped a few years ago. But the sound difference between the two is night and day for sure. I'm sure the T3100's sound good, I'm just going off of my experiences though. You won't be dissapointed with the logitechs, they've sounded great with onboard audio, sound cards, mp3 players, etc. Plus having a gain for the sub is handy depending on the source and if you have EQ options...the cheap creatives sbs340's don't.

Ugh.. if you have to get a set of 2.1s at all, These, or These. First set is 60 RMS watts (ignore the reviews, those people are idiots) second set is 50RMS watts. Seriously though.. 2.1 setup.. so meh when for £50 you can get some X540 5.1s which will at the very least give you a much better gaming experience.

I have a 5.1 set of both Logitechs and creatives. the creatives arent as clear IMHO I like the sound from the logitech much more.

Creatives = High pitched whine type sound, tin can like
Logitechs = Full bodied sound with out the crackly high noise.

Both ran on DFI Blood Irons, sam music file, same codex, same drivers.

Thats because crapative don't stand a chance against Logitechs might. Finally all those years of corner cutting and sub-par products are catching up :D

Did you just pick those on RMS or do you know if they are good?

I picked em based on their paper specs, good RMS power and frequency responce ranges. The DiVoom set should be better at producing low tone sounds.

You know RMS is just marketing BS right?

RMS is not marketing BS, watts is marketing BS.

ED - To make things a little clearer, RMS watts and watts are slightly different. Heres how it breaks down, 1000mW = 1W, 10W is 1 RMS watt, so if you see a speaker setup "boasting" 200W, thats only 20 RMS watt. RMS watts is what you want to look at, the higher the RMS watt number, the louder and more powerful they are :D The second thing to look at is frequency responce, that tells you how good the speakers essentially are at low, mid and high tones.

I would say Logitech but i also suggest you save up a few more pounds and get the Z3 or Z4 speakers.
I have the Z3's for 3 or 4 years now and they have pretty good sound. And heavy bass if you want to. And after 4 years still as good as i got em.

RMS still cant be properly compared between companies to determine sound quality.

Are the X-540s really that good?

I can see I'm going to end up getting them

Just where to put the three extra speakers.

Yeah if you want to go for 5.1 get the 540's they are awesome.
I was thinking to get the updated version of the 540 the G51.

The X540s are very very good. Review

The only way that I wanted to test this sound system is to attempt to blow a speaker or get it to crackle or sound bad. I played multiple songs at full blast that played a lot of high notes, bass, and many sounds at once. The subwoofer always sounded very clean when it hit no matter what I threw at it. Since I’m in the basement, I played a few songs with a lot of bass while I was upstairs to see if I could hear it. I could hear it clear as day and it was loud! It was seriously deafening to sit in front of this system while it was turned up to the maximum. On my old set of Dell speakers, you could really tell how crappy they were when you turned the music up to their maximum because it was crackly and just didn’t sound right. I’ve never heard such crisp sounding computer speakers in my life, and that’s quite a claim. Even my buddies were awed at how good these sounded and just how loud you could get them.

Watts are universally measured, there is no "variations". The formula is very simple. 1000mW = 1W, 10W is 1RMS watt.

I'm not saying there isnt a universal measurement, I'm saying its not that accurate to compare sound quality

And those speakers on the X-540 are quite big, centre is too big to go in front of the monitor, and it seems a waste having rear speakers in front of me.

I think I'm gonna stick to 2.1s for now :)

Benchmark Scores Fast. I don't need epeen.
Frequency response as I said essentially tells you how good the speakers should be at low, mid and high tones. I said nothing about RMS watts defining sound quality, just that RMS watts defines how loud (max. volume) and powerful (Bass) the speakers are.

Link to cheapest X540s I can find

The center speaker also has a "clip" which allows it to be mounted on the top of CRT or LCD screens. For shame on you not examining the pics properly!

I had my 5.1 speaker put all to front it's still better than a 2.1 setup thought Vista doesn't emulate the rear speakers as front Windows XP does. I don't really care if the music is trashing due to all of my speaker are set-up all in front

I still disagree about RMS but I dont want this to go any further, lol.
And I know it has clip but looks fugly IMO

I still want to stick to 2.1 i think, I cant see how having 5 speakers in front of me is better. I would rather get a better set of 2.1s

What are these Z series being linked to? just the next step up from X series?

Go with 2.1's now, you can always get 5.1's later man. Remember folks some setups work for some and not others. I wouldn't mind a 5.1 speaker setup, but I'd never get to crank it, I have next to nowhere to put the speakers, hell my 2 satellite speakers on my x-230's are on the wall next to my monitor because I have no more room on my desk atm. But the sound is crisp, clear, lows are great, it's all good.

If you guys want to get into technicality specifics, getting anything cheap...well you'll get what you paid for. But these logitechs proved to me that's not always the case. Sure 5.1 sounds great, but using expanded sound/3d whatever does help the sound stage in some games, movies...really it depends on how picky you feel you need to be. If I had the room I'd have a larger 2.1 setup due to less sh!t to place and deal with overall. I'm happy with my 5.1 headset, sure it's not as accurate, but they're damn good overall...when I want 5.1 for gaming/movies, slap those on, as loud as I want, good to go.

Frequency response isn't jack shit without a good amplifier and good db response rates though, if I learned anything when piecing together home and car audio systems, you gotta get the right mix if the BS they advertise, or go with a brand more known for making better products.

I still say get the x-230's, enjoy them, upgrade when you can afford to and have to room to do so and be good to go. I can't imagine having a bunch of speakers in front of me from a 5.1 setup, you can say it sounds better, but it just seems more like a waste to me. That's just my thoughts though, if I got a 5.1 setup, I'd have to reconfigure all sorts of things in my office so I could justify setting them up and operate them as intended...hence going with my 2.1 setup.

i have owned the logis that you linked and yes they are very very good. Although those divooms that ket posted are tempting me. I like the wireless remote and at sub £30 its not a bad deal
